Community Service Officer Intern (Non-Union)

About this Position A Community Service Officer Intern works no more than 30 hours per week for up to four years while enrolled as a full-time student in a two or four-year law enforcement program (specific fields of study listed in Education & Experience Requirements section) and working towards completion of Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) licensing requirements. This is a paid student internship that is eligible for tuition assistance of $250.00 for every 500 hours of work; tuition assistance is paid directly to your higher education institution for program expenses. SUMMARY/PURPOSE To provide support to the Police Department through City ordinance enforcement and investigation and other community service and administrative tasks. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) 1. Patrol designated areas in support of the Department's responsibility for City ordinance enforcement. 2. Identify and issue appropriate citations for violations of City ordinances. 3. Identify, report, and/or correct hazards to public safety. 4. Establish and maintain professional relationships with the general public. 5. Maintain a positive, visible Department presence in the community. 6. Plan, conduct, coordinate, and document investigations. 7. Transcribe notes and recordings into formal written reports. 8. Collect and preserve evidence. 9. Coordinate case preparation with assigned prosecutors, law enforcement, and other personnel. 10. Testify in court as needed. 11. Assist patrol officers in non-enforcement related activities. 12. Conduct follow-up investigations on minor hit-and-run or property damage accidents. 13. Provide traffic control at special events, major fires, parades, or crashes. 14. Arrange for the towing of disabled, seized, or abandoned vehicles. 15. Provide explanations of police protocols and procedures to the public. 16. Report community concerns to sworn officers. 17. Refer calls and walk-ins to appropriate police personnel while working the front desk. 18. Perform administrative tasks for police personnel.
