Job Summary
The University of Michigan'sScience Learning Center (SLC) (https://lsa.umich.edu/slc) is seeking a collaborative and innovative professional to lead one of the largest peer-led academic support programs in the country. The Study Group Program Manager reports to the SLC Assistant Director and shares responsibility for a nationally recognized program that engages over 250 student facilitators and thousands of undergraduates in STEM each year.
The Study Group Program Manager's role blends day-to-day operations with opportunities for creativity, leadership, and professional growth. You'll recruit, train, and mentor facilitators, design and assess active-learning experiences, and collaborate with faculty to support student success in high-enrollment introductory science courses. You'll also contribute to campus-wide initiatives to support STEM Success.
This role is ideal for a higher education professional who wants to make a measurable impact on undergraduate learning while developing skills that prepare them for future director-level opportunities in student success, academic support, or higher education leadership.
Some evening and weekend work is required for start-of-term training, support during busy periods prior to exams, workshops, collaborations, and special events.
This position may be eligible for remote and/or flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change, depending on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.

About LSA and the Undergraduate Education Division
The College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) is the largest college on the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan. It is home to over 4,500 faculty, staff, LEO lecturers, graduate students, and temporary staff and serves over 18,000 undergraduate students in over 100 degree programs.
LSA'sUndergraduate Education Division (https://lsa.umich.edu/lsa/faculty-staff/undergraduate-education.html) includes approximately twenty-four academic and academic support departments, including the SLC, from across LSA dedicated to student exploration, engagement, and learning. We offer curriculum and advising support as well as instructional support for both students and faculty. The division also houses the LSA curriculum committee and the Curriculum Support department that runs Applied Liberal Arts and University Courses each term. Many of our academic enrichment programs feature high-impact educational experiences, such as study abroad, undergraduate research, and civic engagement. We also serve as an incubator for curricular and co-curricular innovation. Together, we pursue a mission of academic excellence and creativity for the students served by the Division and the faculty and staff who advise, teach, guide, and support them.
Responsibilities*
Program Management & Supervision (35%)
Shared supervision of approximately 250 undergraduate study group facilitators and course leaders and one graduate student
Conduct observations, evaluations, and feedback sessions that strengthen facilitation skills and foster professional development.
Address performance issues and resolve concerns related to academic integrity, bias, or professionalism, including mediation, additional training, or termination when appropriate.
Assessment & Continuous Improvement (20%)
Design and implement surveys, rubrics, and evaluation tools to assess program effectiveness.
Analyze results and present findings to inform facilitator training, program development, and faculty partnerships.
Use data to identify trends and recommend improvements in facilitator preparation and student support.
Facilitator Training & Development (15%)
Provide New Facilitator Training at the start of each academic term for new student hires.
Lead monthly active-learning workshops for facilitators and course leaders on collaborative learning, facilitation skills, and research-based strategies.
Develop and provide targeted training based on observations, evaluations, and program needs.
Faculty & Campus Partnerships (10%)
Build and maintain strong relationships with STEM faculty by sharing program outcomes, aligning study group practices with course content, and conducting classroom visits.
Partner with faculty and staff to integrate academic support referrals and connect students to services.
Recruitment & Selection (10%)
Manage a competitive annual application process with 400 - 500 applicants.
Design rubrics, conduct interviews, and recommend 100 - 150 hires each year.
Conduct outreach to programs and student organizations to attract diverse and highly qualified facilitators.
Special Projects & Initiatives (10%)
Support SLC-wide initiatives such as implementing new technologies, planning events, and participating in interdepartmental projects.
Contribute to ongoing efforts to support STEM Success.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree
Three to five years of higher education experience with supervisory responsibilities over student and/or professional staff
Exceptional interpersonal skills, including positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff, and a proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
Outstanding organizational, problem-solving, motivational, and communication skills, with the ability to be self-driven, set own deadlines and prioritize multiple tasks
Ability to maintain the integrity of confidential materials and student information
Desired Qualifications*
Experience in an academic support role and/or university learning center
Knowledge of student learning theory and the ability to apply best practices programmatically
Experience successfully managing and overseeing large-scale programs and/or projects involving multiple stakeholders
Possession of at least one degree (undergraduate or graduate) in a STEM field, related degree, or experience.
Master's degree in higher education, student services, science education, counseling or equivalent
