Job Description
The Peace Officer Lab Assistant plays a vital role in supporting student learning and ensuring a safe, well-organized lab environment. This position provides direct oversight and guidance to students during lab sessions, reinforcing instructional objectives while maintaining safety protocols. The Lab Assistant serves as a resource for students, offering hands-on support and fostering a productive learning atmosphere aligned with program goals. This responsibility is considered essential, as it directly supports the core function of the lab and requires specialized knowledge of law enforcement procedures and safety standards.
In addition to student oversight, the Lab Assistant is responsible for preparing, maintaining, and cleaning lab classrooms to ensure readiness for instruction and demonstrations. This includes managing supply inventory and coordinating materials needed for efficient and effective lab experiments. The role requires a high level of accountability and attention to detail, with discretion level A, allowing the employee to make informed decisions, take appropriate action, and report outcomes through standard review processes. This position is ideal for individuals with a strong commitment to public safety education and a proactive approach to supporting academic excellence.
Salary Range: $20.58 -$28.35 hourly
Minimum Qualifications
6 months of teaching/tutoring experience in Peace Officer education at the high school level or above or,
2 years of work experience as Peace Officer (where no degree/certificate/diploma/licensure is required) or
An equivalent combination of education and work experience. An associate degree is equivalent to 6 months' experience; a bachelor's degree is equivalent to 1-year professional experience.
Preferred Qualification
Knowledge of Peace Officer education to assist and instruct students in labs and evaluate student performance.
Knowledge of subject matter presented within the college lab sufficient to respond to conceptual questions raised by students.Knowledge of laboratory equipment sufficient to instruct others in its proper use and to perform routine maintenance.
Lab practices, techniques and safety standards sufficient to determine the physical layout of a lab and to prepare various lab materials and experiments.
Ability to observe the progress of the student and prepare written and verbal evaluations to the student's instructor.
Ability to communicate orally with students and instructors through short lectures, demonstrations or discussions.
Ability to plan, assign, and evaluate the work of student assistants in the performance of routine lab work.
Ability to develop and maintain lab records and reports.
Ability to analyze instructional lab practices and experiments and develop and recommend changes or new approaches to instructors.
Ability and initiative to make independent decisions and solve problems for which there is no precedent or procedures since s/he has extensive freedom to act throughout the day
Organizational skills and ability to coordinate and prioritize work assignments effectively and efficiently, sometimes under high stress levels.
Knowledge and proficiency in various software for the personal computer such as word processing, spreadsheets, and various databases; as well as copiers, fax machines and other office equipment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality in dealings with faculty, staff, and students.
Excellent grammar, spelling, record keeping, and basic mathematics.
Knowledge of human relations skills and communication skills so that a favorable environment is created and maintained within the office and with the external community
