Job Description
Position: Boiler Mechanic
Location: McMurdo Station, South Pole or Palmer Station
Type: Full-Time, Contract,
Duration: Approx. 5 months
Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location
Boiler Mechanic o Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed UnitedStates Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). BoilerMechanic will perform hands-on boiler operation tasks on maintenance or constructionprojects, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the PM Foreman. Taskingis based on ASC schedule requirements.
Position Responsibilities:o Diagnose, repair, and perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existingDiagnose, repair, and perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance on boiler systems:hydronic, hot water heaters, steam HVAC systems and associated equipmento Maintain boiler systems in accordance with provisions of the ASME Boiler and PressureVessel Code. Boiler systems may include steam, hydronic, hot water heaters, along withother @types of heating systems, pumps, forced air furnaces, air handlerso Maintain, monitor, troubleshoot and repair station boilers and associated systems, heatexchangers, pumps, controls, air handlers, commercial steam kitchens, and zone valvesin all buildings.o Maintain, monitor, troubleshoot and repair circulating pumps, back-up pumps, heatexchangers, strainers, valves, expansion tanks, air separators, unit heaters, heating coilsand system controls to assure adequate operationso Inspect all glycol and steam lines for damageo Perform preventive maintenance in accordance with the preventive maintenanceprogramo Monitor, regulate and repair fuel lines and air adjustments for the boilerso Monitor, repair and maintain boiler control systemso Commission and startup new equipmento Submit reports as required by supervisoro Timely response to emergency service calls during and outside of normal working hourso Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed,materials used, and processes involvedo Advise Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirementso Accomplish tasking working from Job Plans, verbal information, schematics, blueprints,wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicablespecifications and codes.o Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed,and create SOPs as directedo Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind andextreme cold weathero Proactively identify any unsafe conditions or hazards and communicate them effectivelyo Work directly with other departments to plan and complete taskingo Learn and use computer-based labor, material, and maintenance tracking applicationso Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management andQuality Assurance requirementso Other duties as required
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:- High School diploma or GED- Minimum 4 years' experience in boiler operation and complete hydronic and steam HVACsystems maintenance and repair- Documented experience in construction, repair, and/or maintenance of commercial,residential, and/or industrial facilities' boiler systems
Expected Skills and Competencies:o Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, diagrams, maintenancemanual and manufacturer's troubleshooting guides to accomplish taskingo Experienced developing written work plans, job hazard analysis, and job safety analysisrelated to the work activities under a permit to work systemo Proficient in LOTO procedures for various taskingo Proficient in confined space safety protocolso Proficient in risk assessment and determination of PPE appropriate to specific taskingo Knowledgeable of limits of PPE and proper maintenance of PPEo Familiar with fall protection and respirator useo Competent analyzing situations and making technical and safety decisions based onspecifications and applicable codes and manufacturer guidelineso Solid decision-making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solveproblemso Good organizational and planning skillso Possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectivelyutilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications- Preferred:o Certificate in Steam Boiler Operation/Maintenanceo ASSE 19210 hydronic Heating & Cooling Certificateo Experience with Microsoft Office Suiteo Experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management
Physical and/or Other Requirements:o Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periodso Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF fordeployment to Antarcticao Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employero Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSFo Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up tothe safety regulation maximum as required by the position.o Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing inand out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required bythe position.o Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.o Valid Driver's License issued in the United Stateso Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
