Position Summary

Bowdoin College's Department of Anthropology invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment in Anthropology at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2026. We seek a cultural anthropologist whose research and teaching focus on health, medicine, or well-being in relation to contemporary issues as they manifest in local cultural @contexts and global relationships. Geographic area specialization is open, though we especially welcome applicants whose regional expertise expands beyond those currently covered by continuing faculty in the Department. Bowdoin is particularly interested in candidates dedicated to undergraduate teaching and with a promise of long-term successful research and/or creative work. A Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field is expected by the date of appointment.

We welcome applications from scholars who have an active ethnographic, fieldwork-based research program attuned to broad questions of anthropological significance and who demonstrate teaching excellence. We encourage applications from scholars who substantively integrate analyses of inequity and power, engage innovative conceptual frameworks or methodological approaches, and/or are interested in interdisciplinary or community-based collaborations. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following: (dis)ability and ableism; mental health, addiction, and recovery; cultural reclamation and food sovereignty; migration, displacement, and health insecurity; prisons and carcerality; care and biopolitics.

The successful candidate will teach courses in their topical and geographic areas of expertise and will contribute to the rotation of core courses for the major in Anthropology (currently including "Introducing Anthropology: What Makes Us Human?" and "Anthropological Research: Methods and Ethics in Practice" or "Anthropological Theory: Concepts in Context"). Our vibrant departmental community maintains a curriculum focused on cultural anthropology and anthropological archaeology. The teaching load is two courses per semester.

Bowdoin College offers opportunities for professional development, a fully funded, year-long pre-tenure sabbatical leave (after three years of teaching and successful reappointment), and regular, generously funded, post-tenure sabbaticals. Support for teaching, grant-writing, artificial intelligence initiatives, computing software, and community partnerships in courses is available. The College also offers robust programming and resources for establishing and enhancing mentoring networks.
