About the Role
We are seeking a Cage Wash Technician I to provide essential cagewash support for the proper care and maintenance of the animal care and use program for our public health federal customer's facility.
This position involves cleaning, sanitizing, preparing and maintaining laboratory animal caging and accessory equipment, as well as ensuring compliance with safety and quality assurance guidelines. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to maintaining the highest standards in animal welfare practices.
This is an entirely onsite position at our customer's location in Atlanta, Georgia. This position is contingent on contract award.
Responsibilities
Meet the daily scheduled output of caging and accessory equipment in support of the non-human primate, large and small animal husbandry operation as directed.
Clean, sanitize and sterilize animal caging and accessory equipment.
Dispose of waste from the facility in designated containers following appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Maintain and perform routine repairs on caging and racks.
Assist in installation of caging and other equipment as needed.
Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on the cage washers and autoclaves, including checking and cleaning filters and roto-arms.
Process clean caging and accessory equipment appropriately, including putting bedding into cages and autoclaving cages and supplies.
Assist in sanitation and decontamination in all areas of the facility.
Remove soiled bedding from cages and prepare them for washing.
Understand and follow appropriate SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines.
Prepare and submit required cagewash records, charts, logs, and inventories promptly and accurately.
Track and document cage wash performance, including water temperature and cleanliness, using tools like temperature indicators and culture tests.
Maintain clean, sanitized and organized work and personal areas.
Assist in receiving and storing of materials and supplies.
Ability to work flexible hours when needed to meet the operational needs of the facility.
Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff.
Perform other duties under supervision, as assigned.
Requirements
Required Experience and Skills
Previous work or training experience in animal husbandry and/or cage washing preferred.
Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication abilities in English.
Ability to adhere to safety protocols and ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and standard procedures.
Ability to work independently and within a team.
Ability to obtain government clearance.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
Will be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
Education and Training
High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required.
Desire to become AALAS certified at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, or otherwise move about the facility on a continuous basis.
Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 55 lbs.
Must have no known allergies to animals, feed, or chemicals
Walking, reaching, bending, and stooping.
May be exposed to Hazardous materials and will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against exposure to pathogens and chemicals.
Ability to obtain necessary immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases relevant to laboratory placement, including Hepatitis B, among others.
Ability to obtain respiratory clearance and fit testing may be required.
Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and potentially infectious biological agents.
