Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview:
The Wastewater Environmental 2 position is located in IDEM's Southeast Regional Office. The position works with various @types of municipal and industrial wastewater systems by helping them comply with federal and state environmental regulations. The position provides technical assistance to facility operators and plays a role in assisting wastewater system operators with resolving issues and addressing complaints. This position is integral to the success of the agency's efforts to assist municipalities and businesses get into and stay in compliance with state and federal environmental rules and regulations.
The duties of the position are: conduct routine onsite inspections at all municipal and industrial wastewater facilities; assist wastewater systems with meeting permit conditions and operations of wastewater plants and facilities; provide technical assistance activities; respond to requests for assistance with regulations and agency programs; write detailed technical reports; learn multiple computer programs; and respond to complaints and system issues. I nspections activities include: a review of the source, treatment, labs, monitoring programs, operator certification, and the overall management and operation of the wastewater system. If deficiencies are found, the inspector assists the system to determine what corrective actions are required, and the follow up to check that compliance is achieved. If necessary, IDEM staff will provide technical assistance to help operators identify and correct issues at the facility.
This position is stationed at IDEM's Southeast Regional Office located in Brownstown, Indiana. The position will report to the Brownstown office daily. The position will be responsible for outreach and technical assistance within 11 counties served by the Southeast Regional Office. The position requires frequent daytime travel. Minimal or occasional overnight travel may be required. A valid Indiana driver's license is required. A vehicle is provided for daily travel while on duty.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Ability to conduct surveys, inspections and investigations of NPDES facilities and sites, review projects/situations, read plans, interpret findings and make recommendations;
Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and laws, rules, regulations, guidelines and acts;
Ability to prepare documents for administrative and regulatory action;
Ability to conceptualize, coordinate and implement studies;
Ability to perform in a professional manner and make sound recommendations under extremely stressful situations;
Knowledge of, and ability to coordinate, a complex technical database;
Ability to research water quality-related issues;
Ability to effectively interact with parties with diverse levels of environmental expertise, particularly for purposes of meetings, hearings and negotiating critically sensitive issues;
Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing;
Ability to interpret and apply legal terminology and practices and ability to apply these in a variety of conditions and situations;
Ability to develop and define procedures and accomplish objectives within the appropriate and established deadlines;
Job Requirements:
Thorough knowledge of chemistry, biology, hydrology, mathematics, engineering and other environmental sciences as they relate to program area;
Thorough knowledge of water sampling, laboratory analysis and interpretation as it relates to the program area.
