About the Position: Serves as Assistant Engineer aboard a Corps of Engineers ; Shallow Draft Dredge or Multi-Purpose vessel for Wilmington District, peratios Division. Responsibilities Assists the Chief Engineer with Performing routine maintenance to all dredge equipment . Performs maintenance and repairs to all mechanical and electrical equipment used in operation of the vessel. Makes periodic inspections of all mechanical equipment to ensure correct performance, repairs, and maintenance. Ensures that all tests and analyses are conducted in connection with the operation of machinery. Inspects all operating machinery to ensure proper functioning. Prepares purchasing requisitions and maintenance status updates for machinery spare parts. Minor and routinerepairs are subject only to general supervision, but major repairs are performed under directsupervision. Completed work is spot checked by the Chief Engineer who makes periodic inspectionsto observe the operation, condition, cleanliness, and orderliness of equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside, subjecting employee to various climatic conditions.Considerable muscular effort is required in making general and technical repairs, and in walkingover the vessel decks and up down stairways and ladders. Hazards encountered are burns, injuryfrom moving machinery, electric shock, falls from stairs, ladders, and on icy or slippery decks,excessive heat and noise, fumes, dirty and greasy equipment, and moving machinery and, in theevent of collision, there is the danger of being thrown against or into moving equipment, anddanger of drowning if vessel takes on water. Incumbent works regularly in areas where noiseexceeds 80 decibels and is exposed to the effects of paints, acids, and solvents.
