Summary The Staff Podiatrist Surgical position is responsible for management of diagnostic, preventive, and/or therapeutic podiatric forefoot services including clinical setting, minor and major operative procedures. The applicant is a recognized expert in dealing with a variety of difficult lower extremity wound, medical and orthopedic cases. Maintains clinical and administrative records as required. Responsibilities Duties include but not limited too to following: Provides a full range of services including assessment and using the most appropriate techniques in providing quality care in Podiatry. Performs appropriate evaluations for patients. Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions to units/programs in the department which they are assigned and has clinical privileges to practice including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management. Orders diagnostic tests and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions. Must actively participate in the education of Podiatry residents. Serves as a consultant to other staff and trainees and assist in implementation of treatment plan as appropriate regarding their patients. Plans and oversees the completion of personal research programs, designed to provide information regarding program planning and relevant treatment approaches. Ensures that the practice of Podiatry is consistent with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice psychiatric guidelines, VISN standards, National statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education and HIPAA policies. Qualifications Podiatrist Basic Requirements English Language: Podiatrists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d), 7407(d). Citizenship: Candidates must be a United States citizen. Education Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Medical Education of the American Podiatry Medical Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Licensure: Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors.
