JOB REQUIREMENTS: The Utility Department operates, maintains, and repairs the municipal water and wastewater systems for the entire Village including: 3 water towers, 6 wells, 70 miles of water mains, 800 hydrants, 11 sanitary sewage lift stations, 60 miles of sanitary mains, and the wastewater treatment plant that treats approximately 1.50 mgd. Utility Operators perform a wide variety of tasks pertinent to the operation and maintenance of these systems. This Operator position will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of the Village Utility and work both within the wastewater treatment plant as well as maintain the wells/water towers and sanitary collection system throughout the Village. The Water and Wastewater Utility Department includes 8 Utility Operators, Field Operations Coordinator, Utility Director/Engineer, Administrative Assistant, and Office Assistant. This position does require working rotating weekend (approximately one weekend every six weeks) and holiday duty as scheduled by supervisory staff. During the assigned weekend and holiday duty, they will serve as the first point of contact and respond to all Utility-related emergencies as they arise. Due to the necessity of responding quickly to emergency situations, this position must reside within twenty (20) miles of the Village of Grafton boundaries within one year from the date of hire. ** OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Thorough knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in the operation and maintenance of public wastewater treatment and sewer collection systems, water supply and distribution systems, and the ability to perform necessary maintenance and repairs of those facilities and systems. Ability to read, follow and comprehend electrical wiring diagrams, ladder diagrams and schematics. Working knowledge of rules and regulations which affect Utility operations and activities. Skill in operation of the tools and equipment including but not limited to motorized vehicles, hydro-excavating tools, sewer rodder, generators, pumps, compressors, gauges, other monitoring and detection devices, lawn tractor, weed-eater, snow blower, various safety equipment items and a variety of lab equipment, mobile radio, SCADA and PC computer equipment. Ability to handle a variety of duties without close supervision. Ability to apply common sense understanding in carrying out instructions whether oral, written or in diagrammatic form. Ability to perform typical mathematical calculations as required for water and wastewater systems operational control and evaluation. Ability to interpret technical manuals of operation, standard operating procedures, equipment specifications and technical bulletins.
