Summary:
The Director of MedSurg/ED collaboratively participates in shaping the future of patient care through innovative leadership. The Director is responsible and accountable for the management of patient care and nursing practice on designated units and service lines and is recognized as a key leader within the hospital organization. Works collaboratively to develop and implement patient centered care. Mentors and develops management and leadership skills of the managers. Assists managers to prioritize specific unit objectives and plan for future program growth and development. Works with managers, medical staff, and across hospital departments to maximize quality, safety, and service. Works through and with the managers to assure that staffing and scheduling are within the parameters established for the unit(s). Establishes a collegial environment that promotes employee retention and recruitment. Performs duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job. Responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position. As a key member of nursing leadership ensures twenty-four-hour responsibility for the management of clinical operations of nursing units. Conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Hospital.

Provides leadership within the community by serving on boards, fund raising, providing educational programs, and promoting nursing.
Collaborates with nursing programs to ensure a positive learning environment, evaluates the quality of graduating clinicians, and develops mechanisms to enhance this quality
Identify educational needs of existing and potential nursing staff
Collaborate with nursing faculty in nursing research and incorporate research into practice.
Maintain knowledge of current nursing practice and the roles and functions of patient care team members
Articulate patient care standards as published by The Joint Commission, CMS, professional nursing literature, and other related standards.
Understands, articulates, and ensures compliance with the Maine Nurse Practice Act, State Board of Nursing regulations, and Hospital policies.
Ensure that clinical policies and procedures are written, reviewed, and updated in accordance with evidence-based practice.
Role model life long learning. Attends at least one regional or national nursing conference annually.
Maintain current knowledge of patient care delivery systems and innovations.
Determine when new delivery models are appropriate and then envision and develop them.
Serve as a change agent when patient care work/workflow is redesigned.
Understand and articulate payer mix, case mix index, and benchmark database for areas of responsibility.
Understand and effectively manage productivity.
Educate managers on the legislative and regulatory process and methods for influencing both.
Interpret impact of state and federal legislation on nursing and Hospital.
Utilize research findings for the establishment of standards, practices, and patient care models
Disseminates research findings to patient care team members.
Participate in studies that provide outcome measurements.
Design and implement safe clinical systems, processes, policies and procedures
Monitor clinical activities to identify both expected and unexpected risks
Support a non-punitive reporting environment and a reward system for reporting unsafe practices
Ensure staff is clinically competent and trained on their role in patient safety
Articulate and take action to support The Joint Commission standards including a focus on the National Patient Safety Goals.
Leads quality improvement initiative/team; supports involvement in process improvement.

Analyze root causes or variations from quality standards, improves processes with the evidence, and sustains success.

Monitors customer satisfaction surveys and coaches managers to implement service processes to achieve top 25th percentile in Maine.
Leads implementation of Relationship Based Care I.

Ensure staff is educated on risk management and compliance issues.
Develop systems which encourage/require prompt reporting of potential liability by staff at all levels.
