About the Work Unit
The Traffic Safety and Engineering Services, Traffic and Field Regulatory Operations Unit is responsible for providing operations evaluation guidance, standards, and tools; operational level of service evaluations and tools; provide highway safety and operations observations to CDOT traffic engineers that can be used to address specific safety, bottleneck, and operational matters. This unit performs the following: all pre-field and field tasks for providing the initial and final recommendations for all traffic investigations, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and Colorado Revised Statutes required traffic investigations that include establishing speeds, no passing and school zones.
About the Position
The Field Regulatory Operations Technician position will provide traffic engineering field study data collection, analysis, and recommendations, which includes documentation and evaluation of traffic engineering field conditions, comparison of existing field conditions to standards for compliance, and recording existing signing to maintain a statewide highway sign inventory for stripmaps (authorized speed limit and recommended traffic control devices sheets)
This position will also support the CDOT Flagger Program which regulates flagger certification in every roadway work zone in Colorado. It will work collaboratively with private training entities, contractors, traffic control contractors, local agencies, and the public to provide regulation of flaggers throughout Colorado. Under the supervision of a professional engineer and oversight from the Flagger Program Manager, this position prepares flagger class submissions, correspond with flagger instructors and flagger training entities to ensure compliance with policy, reviews entity applications, terms & conditions, and flagger instructor agreements for new and recertifying entities to ensure continued qualifications for the flagger program.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supports the Flagger Instruction Training (FIT) curriculum that provides monthly FIT classes for private and public flagger training entities;
Assists the Field Operations EPS Technician III, (with the assistance of other Field Operations Technicians), perform Field Study work accurately, timely, independently, and in accordance with current practices and procedures;
Create memo folders;
Collect curve data, speed data, school study data, passing/no-passing zone data, etc.;
Collect inventory of highway traffic control devices (i.e., signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, passing/no-passing zones, etc.);
Collect highway feature data (i.e. divided roadway, intersections and @type, point and tangent of curves, structures, interchanges, pull-outs, etc.);
Process data collected (i.e., speed, curve, passing/no-passing zone, and school);
Compile, analyze and evaluate field data, conditions, crash history, and reports;
Collect data and inventorying highway traffic control devices requires the working knowledge of the following Field Operations equipment, which includes, but is not limited to desktop and laptop computers, distance measuring instruments (DMI), ball bank indicators, LIDARs (laser), Radars, video camcorders, tripods, Global Positioning System (GPS) units, vehicles, vehicle safety lights and light bars, LIDAR/Photogrammetry units, traffic data collectors, and other safety equipment;
Record video logs of the study area in both directions, and junctions if needed;
Use the study tracking system to log all study work, dates and personnel from study assignment to study closure
Interpret standards and apply appropriate engineering standards, guidelines, judgment, and knowledge to determine recommendations
Evaluate data and make recommendations to ensure Manuel on Union Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) is in compliance;
Enter field data and recommendations into the database; draw stripmaps and junction details with field data and recommendations;
Conduct peer review of other Field Studies, evaluating all aspects of the engineering field studies for accuracy and completeness, and ensure that the recommendations conform to the MUTCD and other engineering practices, manuals and guidelines, and CDOT policies;
Explain work processes and train other Field Operations Technicians;
Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
Your schedule will primarily be 7:30 am - 4:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met. Two days in the office at CDOT HQ is the minimum
Some field work may require work outside normal workday hours
Travel required for field studies throughout the state
Require to operate a CDOT vehicle

A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
AND
A t least five (5) years of experience in one or more of the following: traffic field studies, data collection and tracking, compile,and/or analyze and evaluate data
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or GED;
AND a combination of at least five (5) years of experience and education that includes:
Coursework from a U.S. accredited college or university in chemistry, construction management, engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, biology, engineering, engineering sciences, or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered. A transcript verifying this information must be submitted.
Work experience in any combination of the following: tr affic field studies, data collection and tracking,and/orcompile, analyze and evaluate data
