Overview
At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.
Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus.
The National Security Directorate (NSD) drives science-based, mission-focused solutions to take on complex,?real-world?threats to our nation and the world.
The Physical Detection Systems and Deployment Division, part of the National Security Directorate, delivers policy-informed technology solutions by removing barriers to real-world implementation. We strive to understand end-user environments to transition technology from the developmental stage to deployment. Our diverse expertise in operational systems provides tools, technologies, and approaches for combating a range of threats, both at home and in more than 100 countries around the globe.
Responsibilities
We are looking for that unique person who loves leading the research, design, development, and testing of fieldable autonomous and in situ systems. This person will find that connecting technical solutions to the people who need our help also requires translating sponsors expressed needs into deliverables for those on the front lines protecting and serving our country. Specifically, in this role, we are looking to enhance our mechanical and systems engineering and sensing capabilities for operation in various domains such as air, land, surface, underwater, and space. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in both internal investments as well as externally funded projects that would help set the direction for systems research & development (R&D) at PNNL for the foreseeable future.
The position involves working with a multidisciplinary team to develop applied mechanical and multifunction components to our sponsors, leading tasks and projects, and developing new business. This mechanical engineering position will require the candidate to work closely with AI/ML SMEs to develop integrated autonomous solutions, so skills in overall systems engineering design, modification, maintenance, and operation of these vehicles/systems are particularly desired. A clear understanding of national security related sponsor needs and operations is required.
Will be expected to:
Apply principles of engineering to the conception, design, fabrication, assembly, testing, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems.
Contribute to the documentation of testing results and the development of operational guidelines
Build a professional reputation for technical expertise, and fully apply and interpret standard theories, principles, methods, tools, and technologies.
Selects and develops technical approaches to complex challenges.
Develops and realizes new significant project opportunities, leading the development of technical sections of large proposals.
Work with a highly diverse team, interfacing with scientists and engineers from different disciplines on a daily basis.
Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self and task level teams. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security.
Lead author or developer on a significant number of technical products. Recognized by collaborators for delivery on important programmatic elements.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
BS/BA with 7 years of experience, MS/MA with 5 years of experience, PhD with 3 year of experience.
Experience in advanced manufacturing and 3D printing.
Established engineering background on multiple complex projects.
Ability to work in teams to define problems and develop solutions.
Fully fluent in CAD and mechanical design.
Experience working with national security customers.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Motivated individual with a desire to learn new skills, deliver solutions, and is self-directed.
Experience with microcontrollers, small open-source electronics, and basic programming.
Basic electronic circuit design and fabrication.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements
In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO)risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
