Temporary employees have a schedule of Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, or during a snow and ice event will go on a split shift. The temporary appointment is expected to last from approximately October 22, 2025 - April 21, 2026 and works a 40 hour/per week schedule. (some flexibility to start and end dates)
During a snow & ice season, if there is a snow event where employees are split into an A or B shift, it would typically be 12:00am - 12:00 pm (A shift) or 12:00pm - 12:00am (B shift); an employee may be asked to work 8-hours of work or more depending on the length of the snow event.
All employees are also on a call-out list for weekends and holiday coverage if/when snow events occur. These call-outs can occur any time of day, night, weekend or holidays.
Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one-hour (1) of being called.
Job Duties: (A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.)
Maintains roadways for snow and ice control.
Prepares and inspects winter equipment.
Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup.
Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:
Experience: One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
OR
Education Substitution: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.(In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
AND
Class A or B CDL with no air brake restriction
Tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist.

This position is contingent upon the selected job candidate having a valid Commercial Driver's License, submits to a Federal Department of Transportation Pre-employment drug test (with negative test results), is subject to future random drug and alcohol testing and is registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing; an individual not currently in the random pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamine.
The physical demands of this job will vary but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job may require manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing. Requires exposure to weather elements on a daily basis.
