Department Carpenter Shop Category Building Trades and Technicians Job Type Full-Time Overview The Carpenter, a member of Facilities Operations, applies expert knowledge of the carpentry trade to perform both minor and major repairs and modifications to buildings and furnishings with minimal supervision. The incumbent consistently adheres to University safety regulations and established work procedures. Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.- Performs all facets of the carpentry trade including rough and finish carpentry, framing, sheetrock installation, hanging doors and installing windows, fabricating and installing Formica countertops, installing wood flooring, vinyl floor tile, acoustic ceilings, all @types of trim, and installs door and window hardware.- Observes University safety regulations, use appropriate personal protective equipment and perform work tasks in a safe manner. Ensures proper care in the safe use and maintenance of vehicles, tools and equipment- Interprets sketches, plans and drawings to construct specialty carpentry items such as furniture, custom millwork, built in cabinetry and display cases.- Makes and repairs high grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and other finish work involving skills and knowledge to shape and control surfaces. Perform precise, intricate joining and decoration of wooden items.- Operates and performs preventative maintenance on hand and power saws, planers, lathes, joiners, shapers, drills, sanders, nail guns and a variety of hand tools.- Works independently off CMMS (computerized maintenance management software) work orders. Accepts responsibilities for work assignments. Fully documents work performed.- Communicates clearly and effectively to co-workers and management, both verbally and in writing.- Provides support for all campus special events, as needed.- Assists other trades personnel in multi-trade complex work projects.- Assists in job set-up, including delivering of materials and clean-up of completed projects.- Performs other duties as assigned, including overtime assignments and emergency call-in work. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities in a satisfactory manner. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.- Must be a high school graduate, have completed a technical apprentice program in the Carpentry Trade or possess the equivalent in educational and practical experience.- Possess five (5) or more years experience in the Carpentry Trade.- Must possess journey level knowledge of the potential occupational hazards connected with carpentry work and the associated safety standards and practices, which should be applied.- Ability to work, with proficiency, across the range of trade skills normally encountered by the carpentry trade in all kinds of facilities. This includes ability to carry out work from the planning stage through test and checkout inspection. Includes building construction and alteration including framing, doors, windows and invisible repair and renewal of damages.- Ability to safely and effectively work with all @types of carpenter trades hand and power tools such as table saws, radial arm saws, planers, joiners, shapers, routers, band saws, nailing guns, hammers, levels, etc.- Ability to make and repair high grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and other finish work involving skills and knowledge to shape and control surfaces.
