JOB DESCRIPTION:Performs advanced (senior-level) legal work. Work involves organizing and planning legal activities, coordinating the preparation of legal documents, coordinating and providing advice, interpreting laws and regulations, and rendering legal advice and counsel. May supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Coordinates and Advises local election officials, candidates, and the general public on election-related matters. Advises election officials on laws governing municipal initiatives and referenda, including voter-initiated initiative or referendum as requested by petition. Reviews, advises and drafts ballot propositions for municipal elections in accordance with Texas law. Drafts administrative rules to implement election laws. Drafts and tracks legislation relating to election laws. Coordinates and conducts educational presentations concerning the Texas election laws. Drafts and renders legal opinions on election law and related procedures. Confers with and advises interested parties and their attorneys on election-related legal matters. Develops supporting documentation and procedural resources for election officials. Assists with the development of official prescribed state election forms. May require some travel. Performs other divisional work as assigned.REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Experience in municipal law or election law. Law clerk or similar experience can be counted toward the legal experience. Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. Licensed to practice law for at least 10 years with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience with Texas Election laws. Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Legal research and writing experience as a licensed attorney.PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience with reviewing and drafting ballot propositions for municipal elections., Experience with laws governing municipal initiatives and referenda, including voter-initiated initiative or referendum as requested by petition.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Submission of a resume with the official state application. Submission of a writing sample of no more than 10 pages.KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of Texas Election law and legislative experience.Attorney IV Elections Division(Municipal Law Experience) Strong verbal and written communication skills. Skills in instructing others, engaging stakeholder collaboration, and in facilitating workshops and training exercises. Ability to provide technical assistance or guidance to peers and external clients. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor in interaction with others. Ability to adhere to approved work schedule and maintain attendance and punctuality. Ability to work overtime and extended hours on projects. Ability to engage in a collaborative, results-oriented team environment.
