Summary This position is assigned to the Electrical shop within the Engineering service line for the Nebraska Western Iowa Health Care System. Incumbent performs preventative maintenance, installations, troubleshooting and repairs on electrical systems having voltages up to 480 VAC DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation. Responsibilities Major duties listed but not limited to: Installation, repair, preventive maintenance and inspection of the electrical distribution system and associated equipment. Performs the duty as required of journeyman electrician, including the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment. Performs work involving the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls and equipment in industrial, institutional, office and residential buildings. Removes, replaces, tightens, splices, solders and insulates defective wiring, controls, equipment and fixtures. Locates defective parts/equipment through visual observation or through the use of test equipment. Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring fixtures, controls and equipment. Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manual to plan and lay-out the routing, placement, @type, gauge, balance, load, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Determines locations and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances. Physical Requirements: Much of the work requires physical strain from lifting, pushing, and carrying heavy units. The incumbent will work from ladders and scaffolds. Work may be performed in tiring positions such as standing, stooping, kneeling, etc. as well as crawling through sub-basement and overhead crawl spaces. Frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 20 pounds and less often, up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, lifts or moves with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 75 pounds. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Working Conditions: Incumbent must work outside and inside. Outside work is occasionally required during extremely bad weather. Repairs are frequently in areas that are wet, dirty, dusty, greasy, extremely hot, noisy, on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 or more feet, in close quarters such as manholes, crawlspaces, and above ceilings and in attics, or foul smelling occasionally being exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices, such as electrical motors. Frequent exposure to cuts and bruises is a possibility. Incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish tasks in a safe manner.
