POSITION SPECIFICS
We are searching for a Research Faculty to fill the role of Senior Scientist for the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. The Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office (FDAO) is a trusted agent for government sponsors in the understanding of fluid and structure interaction by providing technical expertise in hydrodynamics, turbomachinery design, noise control and experimental design and execution. Research concentrations of FDAO include pump design, multi-phase flow simulations, vehicle control dynamics and computation methods development. Additionally, the candidate with be self-motivated, positive, and a quality conscious person with a desire for excellence. This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.

You will:
Provide technical oversight and leadership of a broad range of projects related to the office's research focus areas, by making contributions to determining feasibility of project goals and objectives
Act as a coordinator of technical tasking across the office and the Laboratory
Manage a large project with broad technical scope to ensure quality and on-time deliverables
Author, co-author, or review reports, presentations, and papers and present to external and internal technical audiences
Interface with external sponsors and collaborating organizations to provide technical direction and guidance
Maintain existing and cultivate new external research relationships
Non-tenure faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience.
Required skills/experience areas include:
Strong background and a record of technical accomplishments in fluid mechanics, fluid/structure interaction, and/or acoustics
Success in an environment where various forms of communication and organizational skills were crucial to be effective
Effective at presenting in front of professionals, conveying information to drive action or decision
Previous success with collaborations in diverse, multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture
Experience with DoD and Navy funding activities and sponsoring offices for relevant technology areas
Personal characteristics of high energy and integrity, ability to solve problems, and sound judgement
Ph.D. in a relevant discipline
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
Familiarity with turbomachinery applications such as pumps, propellers, turbines, etc. and corresponding blade and stage level phenomena
Familiarity with vehicle control and external hydrodynamics
Familiarity with undersea vehicle design, subsystems, and construction
You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply. The candidate selected will be subject to government security investigations and must possess a current eligibility for a secret security clearance; candidates holding an active TS/SCI clearance will be given preference.
Your working location can be hybrid or fully on-site based out of the State College, PA or Reston, VA ARL offices. Occasional travel is required for off-site testing or technical exchange meetings, with frequent travel to sponsor locations within the Washington, DC area.
