JOB SUMMARY:
The Lead Project Engineer - Mechanical Design role is a senior level position responsible for architecting and leading the mechanical design of custom industrial automation systems. The successful candidate will review solution concepts developed by the sales and applications teams and transform them into a detailed project plan with discrete tasks and estimated hours. They will assign work to the appropriate mechanical engineering resources, mentor and provide technical guidance, and directly contribute to the design by creating mechanical drawings and documentation using Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks. This position reports directly to the Director of Engineering and is 100 % on site in either Rochester, NY or Painted Post, NY.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Solutions Architect
Collaborate with cross disciplinary teams (sales, applications, mechanical, controls, electrical, purchasing and project management) to develop integrated automation solutions that meet customer requirements.
Review customer documentation and internal proposal concepts to develop mechanical design plans.
Break down high level concepts into discrete tasks and estimate hours required to complete them, creating a project plan for mechanical engineering activities.
Assign tasks to mechanical engineering resources based on capability and workload; monitor progress and adjust assignments as needed.
Work closely with the project manager and customer from concept through runoff to ensure deliverables meet schedule, budget and quality objectives.
Participate in risk assessments and design reviews; identify and mitigate technical risks.
Develop and maintain company mechanical design standards, processes and best practices.
Evaluate project feasibility, including performing time studies and preliminary calculations.
Mentor and develop mechanical engineering team members; provide coaching and direction.
Support overall organizational growth and perform other duties as assigned.
System Design Engineer
Create mechanical assembly and detail designs for custom automation systems, including robotics cells (e.g., FANUC robot cells), precision jigs and fixtures, and material handling conveyance solutions.
Generate detailed drawings, bills of materials and documentation using Autodesk Inventor and/or SolidWorks; maintain revision control.
Perform engineering analyses and calculations to size components and ensure structural integrity, ergonomics and compliance with customer specifications and applicable industry standards.
Research components and work with vendors to obtain quotes, lead times and technical specifications.
Assist mechanical and electrical build teams during assembly and commissioning; support PLC and robot programmers during system startup/debug.
Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in industrial automation and apply them where appropriate.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPEREINCE:
B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience required.
Minimum 10 years of mechanical design engineering experience in custom industrial automation; experience designing robotic work cells, custom jigs/fixtures and material handling systems.
Hands on automation system build and commissioning experience preferred.
SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE JOB:
Excellent written and oral communication skills to interact with diverse internal and external groups.
Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills and a hands on approach to problem solving.
Comfortable working independently and as part of a team; able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to develop project plans, manage tasks and allocate resources.
Ability to fit and assemble components according to engineering drawings and manuals.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the wage range for this role is$120,000 - 140,000.The rate range provided is a general guideline.
