Position Specific Description
We are seeking an exceptional Lead Data Scientist to spearhead our data science applications and initiatives that drive critical trade floor and grid optimization decision-making operations. This strategic leadership role combines hands-on technical expertise with team management responsibilities, focusing on enhancing data science solutions for demand forecasting and renewable asset generation forecasting. The successful candidate will lead a small, high-performing data science team while driving innovation in data practices across the organization.
Strategic Leadership & Vision
Lead the design, development, deployment, and continuous enhancement of data science solutions supporting trade floor operations
Set technical direction and strategy while planning for future initiatives
Provide thought leadership and identify innovative applications of data science and AI methodologies
Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practices to drive continuous improvement
Technical Excellence & Innovation
Analyze large, complex datasets to generate actionable insights with enhanced visual interactivity
Design and build foundational data pipelines supporting AI initiatives
Oversee creation and deployment of cyber resiliency initiatives
Institute platform resiliency, reliability, data integrity, security, and regulatory compliance standards and develop comprehensive implementation plans
Team Leadership & Development
Lead and mentor data science team members, data engineers, and analysts
Foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation
Drive accountability and establish team commitments with clear deliverables
Manage project timelines and resource allocation effectively
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Customer Focus
Serve as primary liaison between data science team and internal/external customers
Collaborate with IT, engineering, operations, and other departments to satisfy data needs
Work effectively within cross-functional and matrixed team environments
Drive process mapping and understanding of key business drivers
Data Management & Governance
Lead comprehensive data management efforts including data quality, governance, retention, privacy, and security
Ensure and enforce data quality and integrity standards across all projects
Oversee compliance with industry regulations and standards
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
Conduct and oversee ad-hoc analyses, presenting insightful results to key stakeholders
Communicate complex data findings clearly and concisely to non-technical audiences
Explain methodologies and results to stakeholders and IT leadership
Drive metrics development and reporting
Technical Skills
Advanced proficiency in Python for statistical programming and data analysis
Extensive experience with big data tools and machine learning frameworks
Familiarity with DevOps practices and AWS cloud services
Proficient in time-series forecasting
Knowledge of real-time systems, IoT, and SCADA systems
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
Superior analytical and problem-solving capabilities for data interpretation and insight generation
Proven ability to derive meaningful insights from complex, large-scale datasets
Strong attention to data quality and integrity

Job Overview
This position is responsible for leading the development of algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (i.e., "Big Data").
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Provide thought leadership, set technical strategy, and identify possible uses of data science methods
Explain methods and results to upper-level executives
Develop machine learning, optimizations or other modeling solutions
Oversee related employee work, learn new techniques being developed
Prepares comprehensive documented observations, analyses and interpretations of results including technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses
Works with big data and distributed computing platforms
Develops software and contributes to product development
Performs other job-related duties as assigned
