Summary
The Sr. Manager, Component Engineering will play a pivotal role in designing and developing railcar components such as end of car cushioning units, outlets, valves, and hatch covers. This role directly supports revenue growth, cost efficiency, and production quality through new product development, system integration, and customer-focused engineering solutions. The position serves as a technical liaison between production, quality, purchasing, and repair operations, ensuring compliance with industry standards and evolving customer requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform the following essential duties. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.
Lead the development of new products including end of car cushioning units, outlets, valves, and hatch covers to enhance revenue, reduce costs, and improve production control.
Integrate ARI components into new drawings and the MRP system to align with Greenbrier's current production standards.
Create new parts and technical drawings for the repair group to support customer requests and improve aftermarket sales.
Resolve technical issues in coordination with Purchasing and Quality departments related to new car and repair part production.
Enter and manage repair parts Bills of Materials (BOMs) in SAP and DAX systems to ensure accurate production data.
Provide technical support to the repair parts group, offering part substitutions and guidance based on legacy ARI/ACF models.
Maintain and submit AAR valve approval documentation and ensure timely reapprovals for production continuity.
Manage and mentor product development engineers when applicable.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical field.
Minimum 5 years of experience in product development, mechanical design, or a similar engineering role.
Proficient in CAD software (Solid Edge or Bluestar preferred).
Familiarity with SAP and DAX systems for BOM entry and data management.
Demonstrated understanding of material properties and component substitution.
Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with ARI/ACF legacy railcar components.
Knowledge of Association of American Railroads (AAR) approval processes and documentation.
Previous project management experience in a manufacturing or rail industry setting.
Ability to conduct technical research across multiple platforms and legacy systems.
Prior experience leading or mentoring junior engineers or technical staff.
