Summary This Materials Handler position is in Environmental Management services at the VA New England Healthcare System, located at the Providence VA location. This position is full-time at 40 per week Responsibilities The Material Handler utilizes forklifts, pallet jacks, and other powered movers to offload delivery trucks at the Medical Center, storage warehouse and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) throughout the States of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Major duties and responsibilities include: Coordinates all work with the Housekeeping Aide Supervisor. General assignments are given; Responsible for document processing and verification of the quantity and condition of materials and equipment handled She/he receives general instructions from a supervisor, and assignments are usually completed without guidance on methods, procedures or techniques, and work is reviewed for compliance with general guidelines and results achieved; Works in assigned areas with limited supervision; Work is scheduled for completion, accuracy and adherence to procedures and standards periodically; Required to follow schedules, both written and oral, regarding deadlines for completion of assigned tasks; Covers multiple categories and requires coordination of storage, inventory, transportation, installation and assembly; Examines and analyzes existing situations and conditions to propose improvements, refurbishment and/or replacement items; The impact of the Material Handler's work and judgments affect the design space utilized for patient care; Utilizes a significant amount of independence in accomplishing tasks at the remote locations and CBOCs without supervisory presence to accomplish assignments; Requires independence and knowledge of the requirements of the clinics to coordinate with staff, read manufacturer assembly materials, use tools to assemble/disassemble furnishings; Utilize and prepare chemicals, powered cleaning equipment, and common cleaning tools; Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Materials Handler/PD650-02503A Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Authorized Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized This position is a LIUNA Bargaining Unit position. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Material Handler is required to drive a truck for several hours to reach the remote location of service. Incumbent is required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, and to bend, climb and stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. They may lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, with heavier items being moved with handling equipment or the assistance of other workers. She/he moves supplies and materials with pallet jacks, forklifts and through physical labor. During travel, considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. The duties require considerable dexterity, hand, foot and eye coordination, and concentration. Working Conditions require working in storage buildings, pods, trailers, vehicles and warehouses that may be hot, cold, drafty and poor lighting; work outdoors, on docks, making deliveries in all @types of weather conditions during all seasons; hazardous materials may be encountered in daily work activities; will be subject to the possibility of trips, falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, or injury from the use of equipment; may be subject to conditions that could result in serious accidents; personal protective equipment may be required. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
