Duties Description The Environmental Educator 1 at Bayard Cutting Arboretum will manage all of the education and outreach efforts at the arboretum. Duties include, but are not limited to:- Guide and assist patrons, providing visitor information services (in person, phone, email)- Manage Visitor Center and gift shop. Monitor, update, and service exhibits. Maintain Visitor Center facility through light cleaning.- Provide interpretive guidance and support for educational programs.- Work with Arboretum staff, volunteers, and Horticultural Society to manage educational opportunities including: o Children's programming (pre-K) o Seasonal adult and family workshops o School field trips o Horticultural internship program o Annual Horticultural Symposium o Special events/ volunteer days including I Love My Parks Day, Arbor Day, Holiday Tree Lighting, etc.- Coordinate and support environmental education programs at other parks in the region. Provide impromptu pop-up programs at park facilities.- Prepare and review lesson plans for a wide rand of ages and groups.- Evaluate success of programs and outreach services.- Develop and schedule educational program e-blasts to subscribers, assist with newsletter, manage social media.- Increase awareness of the NYS Parks and Bayard Cutting Arboretum's mission to grow community involvement.- Coordinate and liaise with local/regional educators, non-profits, and other potential partners.- Supervise, schedule, and train staff & volunteers regarding the operation of the Visitor Center and educational programming.- Manage all administrative aspects of Visitor Center/ education program; hiring paperwork, reporting hours for payroll, purchasing, daily revenue and inventory reports, process park permits.- Develop and edit information resource guides and standard operating procedures for Visitor Center staff.- Other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position.The qualifications are:Four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional or technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education AND one year of experience teaching about or interpreting the natural world.Substitution: Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental education, environmental interpretation, environmental science, natural history, natural sciences, or a closely related field may substitute for four years of the general experience.Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.Additional Comments:For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
