Job Summary:The Backtender supports day-to-day operations of the tissue machine, ensuring continuous production, product quality, and adherence to safety and housekeeping standards. This position plays a critical role in reel and winder operations, supporting overall tissue manufacturing performance and assisting the winder team to maintain efficiency and minimize downtime.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform all tasks in accordance with safety protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with mill housekeeping standards.
Operate and monitor tissue machine components, with an emphasis on the reel and dry-end operations.
Perform reel threading and reel changes.
Operate overhead cranes safely and efficiently.
Conduct reel and winder sampling and quality testing, including ABB scanner operations and cleaning.
Manage broken handling and coordinate timely removal.
Assist in thecreping blade and skinning doctor change procedures.
Monitor and assist with after-dryer section operations (including steam system, drives, and felt guiding).
Understand and follow the production schedule and maintain regular communication with the Team Lead.
Adhere to permit-to-work requirements, including confined space entry protocols.
Follow all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
Understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and know how to retrieve and interpret information.
Respond appropriately to fire and other emergencies; know site-specific emergency protocols.
Submit maintenance work orders using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
Assist the winder team as needed to maintain alignment with machine operations.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
Minimum of 1 year of experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting preferred.
Prior experience in a paper mill or tissue manufacturing environment is highly desirable.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, production-driven environment.

Frequently Required:

Handling tools, driving equipment, and lifting up to 20 lbs.
Vision Requirements:
Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
Work Environment:This position operates in an industrial manufacturing setting. Exposure to moving machinery, noise, wet/slippery surfaces, high heat, steam, and chemicals may occur. Proper PPE must be worn at all times.
