ACCOUNTANT

Pay Grade: GRADE 150: $67,203.68 - $97,445.34 Annual Salary ($32.31 - $46.85 Hourly rate)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full Time, 40 hours weekly, Eligible for Benefits

GENERAL PURPOSE

Knowledge and experience with governmental accounting principles and practices, sound principles and practices of financial auditing, financial research and report preparation methods and techniques, laws regulating public finance and fiscal operations, and automated financial management systems. To perform professional accounting activities; to maintain a variety of accounts, general ledgers, and financial records, and to perform professional accounting duties involving the reporting of financial transactions and maintenance of financial records for City operations, programs, and services.

To perform professional accounting activities; to maintain a variety of accounts, general ledgers, and financial records; to provide budgetary forecasts, reports, and modifications; and to perform professional accounting and cost accounting duties involving the reporting of financial transactions and maintenance of financial records for City operations, programs, and services. Receives general supervision from the Comptroller.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Perform professional accounting activities; maintain a variety of accounts and general ledgers; prepare monthly fiscal reports and special reports relating to the progress of assigned accounts.

Analyze revenues and expenditures; recommend amendments to the budget as appropriate; prepare final cost estimates for the annual budget.

Prepare annual financial reports for City departments; prepare statistical financial reports; enter updated information into the database and maintain accurate financial records; prepare financial reports from data files.

Prepare cost accounting and asset cost reports from data files.

Reconciliation and property maintenance of inventory records.

Prepare quarterly reports including Federal and State tax returns, and unemployment reports; receive and enter monthly journal entries from various departments; set up new accounts on computer database.

Coordinate the collection and refinement of the City budget; input data and produce various budget related forecasts and reports.

Serve as a financial resource to various City departments; provide information regarding a variety of accounts, revenues, and expenditures.

Assist departments in the proper classification of revenues and expenditures.

Assist with the development of computer-generated reports and information; develop testing procedures and criteria to test the accuracy of the information generated; troubleshoot program problems.

Maintain and reconcile a variety of ledgers, reports, and account records; examine and correct accounting transactions to ensure accuracy.

Provide technical assistance and training to City staff in matters related to financial accounting and budget administration.

Monitor and balance various accounts verifying availability of funds and classification of expenditures; research and analyze transactions to resolve problems.

Recommend and implement changes in accounting and auditing systems and procedures.

Prepare and post journal entries to record revenues, transfers, payments, and correct expenditures.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Participate in safety and risk management ac

tivities; take action to reduce liability to the city.

Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours; and employees are required to use on-site equipment.

Perform other related duties as required/assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Some professional accounting experience preferably in a government or fund-based accounting setting is desirable.

Training equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting, business administration, or a related field or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required capabilities.

An equivalent combination of the above stated work experience and education is acceptable.
