Summary The Deputy Director of the U.S. House Press Gallery assists the Director in overseeing day-to-day operations of the gallery, facilitating press access to congressional proceedings, and ensuring the press corps covering the House of Representatives receives timely, accurate, and impartial logistical support. Responsibilities Job Summary: The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 800 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, child care, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel. The Deputy Director of the U.S. House Press Gallery assists the Director in overseeing day-to-day operations of the gallery, facilitating press access to congressional proceedings, and ensuring the press corps covering the House of Representatives receives timely, accurate, and impartial logistical support. The Deputy Director helps enforce rules of gallery accreditation, maintains close coordination with House leadership, committees, and press offices, and ensures consistent communication with credentialed journalists. The position has day-to-day supervisory/managerial responsibilities. Primary Duties/Responsibilities: Serve as a point of contact for credentialed press seeking access, information, or logistical assistance. Oversee press coverage logistics for committee hearings, floor proceedings, and special events. Assist in reviewing and processing applications for press credentials in accordance with Standing Committee rules. Coordinate with Capitol Police, Sergeant at Arms, and other House officers to ensure safe and orderly press access. Monitor chamber activity and provide real-time updates to the press. Help organize and manage gallery briefings and events involving House leadership or senior staff. Maintain and update internal press gallery communications systems, including email alerts and notices. Step in as Acting Director in the Director's absence. Support the Director in managing gallery operations and staff. Performs other official duties and special projects as assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Qualifications: Minimum: Bachelor's degree in journalism, political science, communications, or related field. Minimum 5 years of experience in press operations, journalism, or congressional affairs. Experience working with or within the U.S. Congress. Strong understanding of House procedures, media operations, and institutional protocol. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. Non-partisan mindset and commitment to equitable access for all accredited journalists. Preferred: Knowledge of press credentialing processes and Capitol Hill security procedures. Familiarity with digital communication platforms and newsroom workflow tools. Must be able to adapt to Congress's unpredictable schedule. *Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactorily completing a criminal history records check (or other applicable security clearance) and a pre-employment drug-test (pre-identified position only).
