PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Lead Data Engineer is to architect, deploy, and scale robust data infrastructure, whether cloud-based or on-premises to support enterprise-wide data initiatives with a focus on automation, reliability, and performance. This role leads the design and implementation of data integration frameworks, oversees the development of data lakes and warehouses, and ensures best practices in data modeling, governance, and system optimization. By guiding engineering teams and collaborating across business and technical domains, the Lead Data Engineer transforms raw data into actionable insights, enabling data-driven decision-making and long-term strategic value for the organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Snowflake Platform Administration Lead engineers are expected to manage Snowflake environments across dev, test, preprod, and prod. This includes:
Advanced proficiency in Snowflake and related tools.
Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
Creating and managing databases, schemas, and service accounts.
Refreshing environments, managing security, and ensuring compliance with data retention policies.
Evaluate and implement best practices for data warehousing and storage.
Executing DDL/DML operations and coordinating data migrations between environments while optimizing the performance of queries and data pipelines.
Managing access controls using AD-integrated roles and SailPoint provisioning.
Data Integration and Automation They are responsible for:
Designing and implementing ETL/ELT pipelines that move and transform data into Snowflake.
Supporting integration with tools like Power BI, ensuring secure and performant connectivity.
Automating repetitive tasks and improving operational efficiency.
Security and Compliance
Ensuring PHI and sensitive data are masked or exposed appropriately based on role-based access.
Collaborating with Cloud and Security teams to align with enterprise policies.
Supporting FedRAMP compliance and secure data sharing across environments.
Technical Leadership and Mentorship
Manage deployment, configuration, and administration of Snowflake environments.
Leading syncs and working sessions to resolve incidents, share updates, and mentor junior engineers.
Delegating ownership of subject areas and tasks to team members to foster accountability and growth.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
Acting as a liaison between engineering, analytics, and business teams to define data product requirements.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data engineering, analytics, and business stakeholders, to deliver high-quality solutions.
Participating in strategic discussions around Snowflakes role in enterprise data architecture, including AI integration and multimodal data blending.
Documentation and Knowledge Transfer
Maintaining detailed documentation for processes, configurations, and troubleshooting steps.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Position does not have direct reports but is expected to assist in guiding and mentoring less experienced staff. May lead a team of matrixed resources.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Level: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or Engineering or related field OR in lieu of a Bachelor's degree, an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required in addition to the required work experience.
Experience: 8 years Experience in leading data engineering and cross functional team to implement scalable and fine tuned ETL/ELT solutions for optimal performance. Experience developing and updating ETL/ELT scripts. Hands-on experience with application development, relational database layout, development, data modeling.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge and understanding of at least one programming language (i.e., SQL, NoSQL, Python).
Knowledge and understanding of database design and implementation concepts.
Knowledge and understanding of data exchange formats.
Knowledge and understanding of data movement concepts.
Strong technical and analytical and problem solving skills to troubleshoot to solve a variety of problems.
Requires strong organizational and communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to handle multiple priorities.
Able to effectively provide direction to and lead technical teams.
Salary Range: $113,616 - $225,654
