The overall function of this position is to serve as assistant to an Engineering Technician 7 in the Project Engineer's office. This position is responsible for assuring high-quality construction work in accordance with plans, specifications, and special provisions. Work is generally performed out-of-doors in various weather and terrain conditions, depending upon the nature of each assignment. May be required to use a state vehicle for district wide travel.
This is a promotional opportunity open to current, permanent employees of DOTD only
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in one of these specialized fields: architecture, cartography, chemistry, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, geography, geology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics.All specialized course work credited must be in the same specialized field. A combination of course work from different fields will not be accepted.
Full-time training in sub-professional engineering from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis for a maximum of one year of experience.
Completion of a two year course of study in a sub-professional engineering curriculum from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for two years of the required experience.
A baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or construction technology will substitute for all of the required experience.
Possession of an engineer intern certificate will substitute for all of the required experience.

Job Duties and Other Information
As an Engineering Technician 5, you will be instrumental in delivering a streamlined and engaging hiring experience for both candidates and hiring managers. In this role, you will:
Serves as assistant to the Engineering Technician 7 in the supervision of inspection of construction projects (slope and grade on bridges, new or existing port facilities, on roadways, levees, canal banks and other structures) and infrastructure improvements.
Inspection activities include but are not limited to monitoring pile driving operations and determining pile load capacity; checking form work for correct slope, grade and alignment; and determining the in-place density of base course, embankments and pipe backfills.
Computes and checks earthwork quantities, computation sheets, cross sections, related field books, haul diagrams, benchmark forms and other data to determine that quantities have been computed according to specifications, plans, and special provisions established by the agency.
Reviews the computations of subordinates and/or contracted personnel; ensures accuracy of figures and timeliness of reports.
Exercises functional supervision in instructing lower level technicians in inspecting for quality and quantity of materials and the methods of removal and placement of materials.
