Texas Department of Public Safety - Office of General CounselThe Texas Department of Public Safety is seeking a skilled administrative professional to join our Office of General Counsel as a Legal Assistant, providing support to our claims and litigation operations.
Position Overview This role serves as a liaison between the public, internal divisions, and legal teams in managing claims filed against the agency. These claims typically involve incidents such as vehicle accidents or other situations where individuals believe the agency may be responsible for damages. You'll help the public and department employees navigate the claims process while coordinating information gathering across multiple divisions.
Primary Responsibilities
Claims Processing: Receive, review, and process claims filed against the agency.
Public Contact: Serve as primary contact for the public seeking guidance on filing claims, providing information about procedures and requirements.
Cross-Division Coordination: Work with staff at all organizational levels, from commissioned officers to executive management, to gather necessary documentation and information.
Legal Team Support: Work with internal litigation attorneys and coordinate with the Office of the Attorney General on claim-related matters.
Information Management: Organize and maintain detailed records of claims, correspondence, and supporting documentation.
Project Coordination: Manage multiple concurrent cases while meeting deadlines.

Employees at this level may: Prepare synopses, abstracts, or summaries of complex legal issues. Prepare attorneys for meeting with complainants, witness, and expert witnesses. Draft and record to correspondence and opinion requests involving legal interpretations and decisions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Conduct limited investigations into the facts surrounding lawsuits in response to discovery requests. Prepare affidavits regarding litigation and obtain necessary documents relevant to discovery requests.
Evaluate and establish the appropriate level of priority for case files, manage a system to track cases, and notify each attorney of pending deadlines and hearings.
Direct the preparation of monthly Commission reports and other reports as assigned.
Maintain internal docket concerning all litigation matters.
Act as liaison between the Department and members of the Office of the Attorney General.
Assist Department personnel in preparation for depositions, trial testimony, subpoenas or any other aspects of litigation in which they may become involved.
Assemble exhibits, affidavits and other legal documents for filings, responses, and other related litigation matters including for use of Attorney General in trial or for internal use at Peer Review Board and discharge hearings.
Assist attorneys in preparation of written responses to EEOC/TWCCRD complaints. Conduct limited investigations into the facts and circumstances surrounding discrimination complaints. Prepare affidavits from the relevant witnesses regarding their knowledge of the situation. Gather and assemble responsive documents.
Use independent judgment to review, analyze, process and respond to Public Information Act requests. Draft correspondence to communicate with the requestors, Department personnel, and the Attorney Generals Office.
Participate in conducting training classes on the Public Information Act for Department personnel; respond to requestors pertaining to the Departments administrative proc
