About The Division
The Account Maintenance Division primarily is responsible for establishing and maintaining accurate taxpayer account information. As part of these responsibilities, the division processes applications, establishes accounts; issues permits, licenses, decals and cigarette stamps; and resolves taxpayer report processing issues.
General description
The Comptrollers office is seeking Accounts Examiner III positions in the Account Maintenance Division. This role performs journey level accounts examination work in the Sales Setups Maintenance Section. Examines records, tax reports, and documentation submitted by taxpayers and their representatives. Responds to inquiries both verbally and in writing in English and Spanish. Maintains current working knowledge of tax statutes, rules and regulations related to Sales tax.
Candidates should be fluent in both written and verbal English and Spanish, detail-oriented, able to work independently and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced processing environment. The ideal candidate will have knowledge in calculating tax, penalty, interest and refund amounts along with computer proficiency and strong verbal and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to work in a team environment, be adaptable to changing workplace demands and communicate effectively with internal and external customers and agency staff at all levels.

Work Hours
Agency standard work hours are Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, 40 hours per week with occasional evening and weekend hours. Hours are subject to change based upon business need or division determination.
This position may be eligible for a flexible/hybrid work schedule if certain conditions are met; working arrangements may change at any time as business necessitates.
Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate s degree.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree in accounting, finance or business.
Experience in accounting, finance or business dealing with analytical/problem-solving issues.
Experience with tax processing systems including ITS, TPR, Webfile and AWM.
Experience with Secretary of State inquiry.
Experience with OnBase.
Substitutions
One (1) additional year of work experience in an accounting, finance or business dealing with analytical/problem solving issues may substitute for 30 semester hours of educational requirement with a maximum of 120 semester hours(four years).

Processes taxpayer's change requests for sales and franchise taxes.
Researches and processes sales tax priority mail and makes corrections to the taxpayers account.
Researches and makes file maintenance corrections to the taxpayers account.
Analyzes and processes original and/or amended sales tax returns.
Reviews assignments, prioritizes workload and follows section policies and procedures.
Prepares documentation to justify actions and monitors accounts for completion of subsequent actions.
Provides information verbally and in writing when communicating with other division personnel, coworkers, management, and agency customers.
Responds to questions from taxpayers, tax practitioners and agency personnel in English and Spanish via telephone and in writing.
Provides taxpayers with information on electronic reporting and payment options.
Resolves taxpayer inquiries regarding electronic reporting and payment programs.
Reviews assignments, prioritizes workload and follows all section policies and procedures to ensure established turnaround times and deadlines are met.
Informs supervisor of the status and progress of activities and workload inventories.
Informs supervisor of problems or errors and recommends appropriate actions for resolution.
Identifies and informs appropriate personnel of work status, changes or problems that affect the section or others.
Processes applications and reports for sales tax.
Performs research on taxpayer accounts, analyzing for proper disposition.
Resolves reporting problems and file maintenance changes using information provided by taxpayers to correct or update their account data.
Performs file maintenance on tax permits and issues new permits.
Interprets related tax statutes, rules, and regulations to determine liability and taxability.
Ensures proper transactions are entered either online or via data entry in the tax processing system(s) and properly documents actions.
Informs supervisor of problems or errors and recommends actions for resolution.
Identifies and informs personnel of work status, changes or problems that affect the section or others.
Analyzes information and determines action to be taken on assignments.
Participates in special projects/assignments as assigned.
Learns and applies knowledge to progressively more critical and complex situations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
