General Statement
Information Technology Services provides secure, reliable communication systems that align and contribute to the success of MSU -Northern's mission.
Senior technician for university desktop systems. Serves as tier 3 technician responsible for the most difficult and advanced desktop related issues. Responsible for developing Windows images for use across campus, researching solutions for users involving computers, peripherals, repair parts, and for researching emerging technologies. Instructs all levels of computer users on effective use of systems and software. Assists in providing computer and audio visual support for campus users and major events.
Duties and Responsibilities
Senior technician for researching, developing, configuring and updating computer images and the deployment of all faculty and staff desktop systems.
Works with ITS system administrators to assess and approve major Windows updates and/or version changes.
Develops, updates, and maintains deployment and user migration tools, scripts, and systems.
Maintains driver libraries for campus computers and other equipment.
Serves as tier III technician handling escalations from tier I & II technicians and issues needing coordination across ITS staff; responsible for handling the most difficult and advanced desktop related problems involving desktop hardware devices, software applications, operating systems, and for users' problems with centrally maintained computer systems, peripherals, and networks.
Responsible for researching, evaluating, specifying, recommending, pricing, and purchasing solutions for users involving computers, peripherals, and repair parts. Maintains list of approved printers with feature sets.
Researches and recommends purchases of emerging technologies that will benefit the university.
Supports the inventory management process. Collects data to manage equipment inventories and disposal procedures. Assesses legacy equipment for obsolescence.
Helps to provide computer and audio visual support for campus users and major events. Develops solutions for spur-of-the-moment events.
Maintains electronic signage solution hardware, service, and server software.
Provides end user support and writes technical documentation for using technology enhanced classrooms, video conference and presentation equipment including projectors, microphones, and sound systems.
Occasional travel in state-owned vehicles may be required to support ITS equipment at other MSU -Northern locations.
Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Two year degree in CIS , CS, electronics, or other related computer field with a minimum of five years progressive experience with responsibility in trouble shooting computer operating systems, networking, hardware systems, and complex, centrally managed computer operations with good background in networked systems. Alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office, Active Directory, system management tools and software applications.
Oral and written communications skills.
Current Montana driver's license with less than 12 conviction points.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Bachelor's degree in CIS , CS, electronics, or other related computer field.
Experience with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager ( SCCM ) and/or Microsoft Intune.
Familiarity & experience with PowerShell and/or other forms of scripting.

Requires ability to analyze data logically and exercise sound judgment in defining, evaluating, and solving difficult technical and operational problems.
Demonstrated knowledge of policies for purchasing and disposal of computer equipment, computer hardware and software specifications, installation requirements, and techniques.
Demonstrated knowledge of overall maintenance techniques, repair procedures, replacement of computer components and a working knowledge of networking concepts, routers, switches, hubs, and servers.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
Ability to maintain the confidentiality, security, and integrity of the University's and user's data at all times.
Requires ability to gain and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, clients and others.
Requires developed oral and written communication skills to present technical information to others with clarity and precision.
Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Bending, stooping, stretching or crawling to inspect equipment, installations and configurations
Must be able to lift computer supplies and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
