Summary
Provide technical input into key strategic transmission decisions by performing a variety of technical transmission studies, documenting the study findings, and making recommendations based on the study results. Clearly present study results to management and fellow engineers; address questions and defend study findings. Represent Transmission planning on internal study efforts and projects and represent SRP in industry forums. Provide engineering services to SRP in a technically sound, safe, timely and cost effective manner to enable SRP to realize its goals and objectives for providing water and energy related services.
What You'll Do
Perform core transmission planning analyses including:
Power flow analysis
Transient stability analysis
Post transient stability analysis
Short circuit analysis
Evaluate transmission planning analyses results and identify cost effective solutions to address system deficiencies identified in the analyses.
Perform all core transmission planning studies including:
Completing system impact studies to determine the impact of connecting large and small generator projects of varying technologies (including batteries) to the Salt River Project (SRP) transmission system.
Completing load impact studies to determine the impact of connecting large dedicated loads to the SRP transmission system.
Perform annual transmission planning studies of the SRP transmission system and determine capital projects needed in the next ten years.
Perform special studies as required to evaluate the reliability of the SRP system under a variety of unique possible future conditions.
Learn how to perform Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Analysis using tools such as PSCAD, EMTP-RV, RTDS, or ATP to:
Perform EMT simulations to analyze:
Switching transients (e.g., capacitor bank energization, transformer inrush)
Lightning and surge arrester performance
Temporary overvoltages (TOV) and insulation coordination
Ferroresonance and sub-synchronous resonance (SSR)
High-frequency interactions in HVDC and FACTS systems
Control and protection interactions in inverter-based resources (IBRs)
Fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) and ride-through performance
Delayed Zero Crossing issues
Model and validate detailed equipment behavior including:
Power transformers, circuit breakers, and instrument transformers
Wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems (BESS)
HVDC converters and STATCOMs
Protection relays and control systems
Support system planning and operations by:
Identifying and mitigating transient-related risks in new interconnections
Evaluating EMT impacts of renewable integration and grid modernization
Coordinating with protection engineers to assess relay performance under fast transients
Develop and maintain EMT models and simulation libraries in coordination with OEMs and internal stakeholders
Lead technical reviews and provide mentorship to junior engineers in EMT methodologies and best practices.
Document the results of all analysis performed, provide updates to management, and present and train on study results as required.
Actively participate in industry committees and tasks forces as a representative of SRP as required.
Actively participate in research activities related to transmission planning
Collaborate with internal SRP teams to accomplish common goals
Serve as technical lead for studies being performed by consultants
What It Takes To Succeed

Ability to work effectively with various organizational groups within SRP. Able to work effectively from home and from office.
Responsible for project budgets and schedules. Occasional contacts with customers and outside agencies. Contacts with suppliers of equipment and services. Occasional travel to suppliers facilities, industry organizational functions and SRP facilities. Ability to work effectively with various organizational groups within SRP. Ability to use engineering tools required for the job (i.e., computer, test equipment, etc.).
Experience
Five (5) years full time experience actively engaged in engineering practice. Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work of the nature defined for the job of Senior Engineer.
Promotion to Level 2 requires a minimum of two years of experience at Level 1; demonstrated capability to perform advanced and more difficult work as determined by the supervisor. Promotion to Senior Level requires a minimum of three years of experience at Level 2; is fully competent in all aspects of functional area of assignment and as such would be recognized as a specialist in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities.
Education
A bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution is required and a master's degree in the area of specialty is preferred.
Testing and Certifications
Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver's license.
Hybrid Workplace
SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
