What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to lead and manage the Electric, Steam, and Turbine (UI-EST) Operations Group within the Utilities and Infrastructure (UI) Division. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of LANL's critical energy infrastructure. The Operations Manager will report to the Utilities & Infrastructure (UI) Deputy Facility Operations Director (FOD) and the UI FOD. The selected candidate will be responsible for compliance with multiple regulatory requirements, including safety, security, and environmental management of the operations with support from engineering, maintenance, and ES&H support organizations. The selected candidate will be required to participate in the UI Duty Officer program (on-call capacity to include after-hours, holidays or LANL shutdowns).
Key Responsibilities:
Lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for the generation, distribution, and maintenance of electric power, steam, and turbine systems.
Oversee day-to-day operations while ensuring safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
Manage and optimize preventative and corrective maintenance programs across the utility systems.
Develop strategic plans and capital improvement projects for energy systems modernization.
Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, environmental, and mission stakeholders to meet Laboratory goals.
Foster a safety-first culture, with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement, training, and team development.
Lead emergency response and incident resolution for critical energy systems.
Manage budgets, performance metrics, and resource planning.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Leadership & Communication: Demonstrated skill in management, supervision, and human resources administration of assigned employees and subordinate supervisors. Demonstrated ability to gain cooperation of others and conduct presentations of technical and/or function-specific information concerning specific projects or schedules.
Operational Acumen: Thorough knowledge of operational management including systems and engineering design and maintenance, configuration management, work control, and control systems. Thorough knowledge of conduct of maintenance, conduct of engineering, conduct of operations and quality assurance programs. Experience and demonstrated skill in identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining action to be performed on problems affecting operations management.
Knowledge & Expertise: Demonstrated experience with and ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics. Demonstrated experience with and ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics. Thorough understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience with LANL's electric transmission and distribution configuration and operations.
Thorough knowledge of boiler steam/cogeneration and package boiler facilities, steam distribution systems, and combustion gas turbine generator operations.
Demonstrated experience with compliance oversight of North American Electric Reliability Corporation/Western Electricity Coordinating Council Distribution Provider Operations & Planning and Critical Infrastructure Protection standard requirements.
Direct experience with technically guiding and directing utilities operations and maintenance personnel.
Knowledgeable in NPDES outfall, storm water, and waste management compliance.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
Work Schedule: This position is a full-time position with multiple schedule options, however the 4/10 schedule is not an option.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
