Position Description:
The Director of Finance (Finance Director) oversees all financial aspects of business and collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to drive the company's financial strategy and planning. This position is responsible for assessing the financial performance of the company as well as possible risks and investments. The Director of Finance is a reliable leader with broad knowledge of all accounting, financial and business principles. The role requires a strategic thinker and effective manager who drives profitability through informed decision making. The Director guides financial decisions, drives process improvement through technology, and leads by promoting the company's culture and maintaining ethical financial practices.
Essential Duties:
Drives annual budgeting and recurring forecasting process.
Provide Actual vs. Budget and historical trending analysis for both operational and financial metrics to provide timely, relevant, and actionable insight.
Creates financial models to support both near and long-term operational and financial planning.
Performance visibility - deliver end-to-end reporting solution for clients, inclusive of KPI/metric selection, back-end data solution, and visualization dashboards.
Performs ad-hoc financial analysis that provides insights into business performance.
Supports the Accounting Team month-end close process and Executive Team with management reviews.
Collaborates with Finance Transformation team to continuously evolve and improve financial reporting systems and processes to create back-office efficiencies.
Identifies and implement performance improvement opportunities that drive margin expansion.
Drives financial planning by analyzing its performance and risks.
Retains constant awareness of the company's financial position and act to prevent problems.
Identifies gaps in the market/industry and spot opportunities to create value propositions.
Sets up and oversee the company's finance IT system.
Provides strategic direction regarding risk management and compliance.
Set targets for and supervise all accounting, payroll, and finance personnel (management accountants, internal auditors etc.)
Oversee all audit and internal control operations.
Conducts analysis to make forecasts and report to upper executives.
Possess the ability to drive change and innovation in the finance /accounting function.
Monitors assets and report on legislative financial impacts.
Arrange and sponsors appropriate assignments and experiences to help people realize their potential and support their long-term aspirations.
Participates in communications for various internal and external stakeholder committee.
Required Qualifications:
Education - A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field. CPA is required. An advanced degree such as a Master of Finance or an Master of Business Administration is highly desirable.
Experience - 10-15 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably within construction or a related industry and/or a combination of education and experience.
Finance Expertise:
Proven experience as director of finance or similar role.
In-depth knowledge of corporate finance and financial planning, accounting principles, compliance, risk management, and best practices.
Solid knowledge of financial analysis and forecasting.
Proficient in the use of MS Office and financial management software (e.g., Vista, SAP) and leveraging data analytics for decision-making.
Strategic Leadership - Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to develop and execute financial strategies aligned with the company's objectives and values; critical thinker with strong business acumen.
Communication and Collaboration - Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; able to present complex financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders and collaborate across all organizational levels.
Ethical Integrity - Committed to ethical financial practices, ensuring compliance and accurate reporting, while avoiding any conflict of interest.
Team Development - Demonstrates success in leading and motivating a team and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Adaptability - As Hensel Phelps modernizes and the culture evolves, the Finance Director needs to demonstrate the adaptability, a willingness to learn, and an openness to embracing new technologies, practices, and processes.
Compensation Range (Colorado Only)
$135,000-$150,000
