This non-exempt position reports directly to a Fire Captain, Lieutenant, or Engineer. The position provides an initial response to fire, EMS, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents in the Steese Fire and EMS Service areas. Serves as apparatus driver for emergency response and as a Lead Medic. Performs daily fire department business, facility and equipment maintenance, and equipment checks. Special areas of responsibility may be assigned (i.e., PPE and Uniforms, Hose Testing, EMS).
The position requires attendance at all weekly and assigned training classes, instruction during recruit training, and participation in training drivers. Additionally, the Firefighter/Medic must achieve developmental benchmarks outlined in the Terms of Employment of this document. Firefighters/Medics will function as acting officers when needed. The position calls for working a rotating 48-hour shift, 96 hours off or 8 hours per day/ 40 hours per week.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Shall provide leadership and mentorship to this organizations members by teaching, equipping, and encouraging potential volunteers, recruits, scholarships, and sustaining members.
This position performs emergency firefighting activities, including but not limited to driving fire apparatus on response, interior attack, wildland firefighting, rescue operations, motor vehicle extrication, and hazardous materials operations.
Functions on EMS calls primarily as a lead medic but may also serve as an ambulance driver or medic, depending on response needs.
Assists in instructing recruits, driver training, organizing drills, and special department training classes.
Participates in daily and weekly vehicle checks and preventative maintenance on apparatus and equipment.
Participates in the maintenance of stations and grounds, including cleaning/janitorial, stocking supplies, mowing, plowing, shoveling, light repairs such as painting, and other tasks to keep facilities clean, orderly, and functional at all times.
Assists in performing computer data entry of EMS reports, training reports, PPE assigned to personnel, hose records, SCBA records, and other projects as assigned.
Abides by the Departments Standard Operating Procedures, Policies, and Guidelines.
This position shall perform other duties assigned by the Chief Officers to assist the Departments daily operation and organization.
This position may be called upon to perform duties outside of regularly scheduled work hours when department staffing, critical incidents, or important department projects are needed.

Qualifications

Experience:
Minimum of two (2) years active experience as a Firefighter
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Safety principles and practices of fire suppression and prevention.
The safe use and maintenance of firefighting equipment and apparatus.
Knowledge of Departmental Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines.
Familiar with local geography, cold weather operations, and resources of the fire service area.
Knowledgeable of patient care in rural environments and off-road rescue operations.
Operate all @types of firefighting equipment and apparatus safely and instruct others in such operations.
Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with the public, peer agencies, and other employees.
Communication, both written and verbal forms; ability to read maps; observation; firefighting techniques; application of advanced life support procedures and CPR.

Physically fit to perform arduous emergency scene duties, including entry into structure fires and lifting of patients at EMS scenes
Must be able to pass department physical agility test. May require medical certification of physical fitness
Certifications and Licenses:
This position requires a comprehensive background investigation to include a local, state, and federal criminal history check and sex offender registry check.
Valid Alaska drivers license.
Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Departments policy.
Certified IFSAC Firefighter I
Current BLS Provider certification.
Current EMT-2, EMT-3, AK-AEMT, or paramedic certification or the ability to obtain within one (1) year.
I-100, I-200, I-700, I-800 certificates (ICS-300 preferred)
Current HazMat Operations certificate
Certified IFSAC Firefighter II (preferred)
Certified IFSAC Fire Instructor I (preferred)
Certified IFSAC Fire Officer I (preferred)
Certified IFSAC Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator (FADO): Driver/Pumper Certification (preferred)
