Duties Description The duties of this position include performing complex survey computations and calculations, in-depth interpretation of historic land records and legal documents and preparation and interpretation of survey maps; answering questions from NYS Attorney General's Office; supervision of field crews and project oversight for boundary, topographic and geodetic control (GPS Network) surveys; respond directly to inquiries from the public and interact with peers and middle management personnel from other agencies; and presentation of survey and mapping projects. Will be required to carry a survey equipment over rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. Minimum Qualifications for appointment to Land Surveyor Trainee, NS: Either 1. Graduation from an Engineering Accreditation Commission, Engineering Technology Accreditation, or Commission Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited bachelor's or higher degree program in surveying or surveying technology; or 2. Eligibility to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying examination through the National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying via letter issued by the New York State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying (proof of eligibility required).Minimum Qualifications for appointment to Assistant Land Surveyor, SG-20: Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) or successful completion of 52 weeks of service as a Land Surveyor Trainee and successful completion of the FS examination.Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DECorReinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.orTransfer Eligible - Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: one year of permanent competitive service as a Land Surveyor Technician 2.55-b/55-c Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications above and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.Individuals appointed as a Land Surveyor Trainee are required to complete a minimum of one year of successful performance as a Land Surveyor Trainee and pass the Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS). If you pass the FS by the end of the first year, you may be advanced to the Grade 20 Assistant Land Surveyor title. If you do not pass the FS by the end of the second year of the traineeship, you will be terminated from your position.
Additional Comments If appointment is at the Assistant Land Surveyor, SG-20 level, the starting salary for this position is $87,693. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $74,193 with an additional geographic pay differential of $13,500, specific to this title and location.The job rate for this position is $107,621. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $94,121 with an additional geographic pay differential of $13,500, specific to this title and location. "Please note, this geographic pay differential is not extended to the Land Surveyor Trainee title. If appointed as a Land Surveyor Trainee, you will receive this geographic pay differential upon advancement to the Assistant Land Surveyor." Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.Must be able to work in remote areas.Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
