Water Systems Construction Engineer

Water Systems Construction Engineer (HELP) Program A professional engineering role responsible for designing, managing, and supporting water, and wastewater infrastructure projects to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient public systems. The Department of Water Environment Protection (WEP) delivers wastewater treatment services that protect public health and local waterways across Onondaga County, supported by a skilled and dedicated workforce.

WHAT EXACTLY DOES A WATER SYSTEMS CONSTRUCTION ENGINEER DO? The primary function of this role is to apply engineering principles to the design, construction, and maintenance of water and wastewater system infrastructure. Responsibilities include preparing plans and specifications, developing cost estimates, reviewing contractor work, and supporting construction activities to ensure projects are completed in accordance with design and regulatory requirements.

Oversees and/or participates in the design of new construction and renovation of water system components such as water mains, pumping stations, water services, fire hydrants, meter installations, etc.

Oversees and/or participates in mapping, implementation and maintenance of the GIS System and its use and function of the system as it relates to water systems.

Oversees and participates in specification writing, materials estimates, inspection, and cost projections as applied to the design, construction, and renovation of water and/or wastewater system components such as water mains, pumping stations, water services, fire hydrants and meter installations, repairs, replacements, upgrades or improvements of wastewater treatment, pumping and conveyance facilities, systems and equipment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a baccalaureate degree in engineering; or, B) Four (4) years of paraprofessional or professional level work experience, or its part time equivalent, in engineering, two (2) years of which must have been in a professional level capacity in civil engineering as applied to design, construction, and maintenance of water transmission and distribution systems and/or wastewater treatment systems and appurtenances; or, C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A and B. S PECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State non- CDL or CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the @type of vehicle being operated.
