POSITION: County Attorney

Serves as primary legal advisor to the County Board Commissioners. Provides legal representation for all other County elected officials and County divisions. Manages those designated legal affairs in which the County is involved. Assures that the County is properly represented in all legal proceedings.

DUTIES:

Directs and guides the practice of law for Montrose County in the areas of

land use planning, zoning regulations, personnel and employment, bond financing, property acquisition, condemnation and sale, taxation, etc. Conducts or guides staff in legal research and preparation of litigation and appeals, drafts or reviews drafts of legal documents, and consults with members of the public and County staff. Advises County divisions concerning legal rights, obligations, procedures, and privileges; studies constitution, statutes, decisions and ordinances; examines legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuits. May occasionally perform Social Services legal functions.

Provides statutory and case law interpretations to County administration and

operational staff. Serves as active counsel and/or counsel of record in litigation for the County as client in legal actions or court cases. Conducts criminal and civil lawsuit, draws up legal documents, advises clients as to legal rights, and practices other phases of law. Assembles evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal action; represents clients in court and before quasi-judicial and administrative agencies of government. May act as the agent of the County in various negotiations, transactions or in dealings with the media concerning legal matters.

REQUIREMENTS:

A Doctorate of Jurisprudence from an accredited law school. Licensed to

practice in the State of Colorado.

Seven (7) years experience in the practice of law as it relates to

local units of government with a minimum of five (5) years experience in County government working with a broad scope of county services.

Negotiation, facilitation, and arbitration experience, both in legal

and administrative/policy-making settings essential.

Admission to the Colorado Bar and other bars as necessary in the conduct of

County legal matters.

Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License and satisfactory driving

record.

Subject to a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

WAGE: $6,444.50 - $7,581.77/ Bi-weekly (Depending on experience)

SHIFTS: Full-time - 40 hours per week

Ability to work evenings or weekends on an as needed basis.
