Performs routine and specialized venipuncture techniques, using appropriate collection tubes, needles, and safety devices
Collects blood samples by venipuncture or capillary techniques for all laboratory testing promptly
Confirms patient identification following VA guidelines, communicates phlebotomy procedures effectively, and promotes a calm, supportive environment to enhance patient comfort.
Uses standard precautions and infection control procedures during all specimen collections
Specimen Processing & Laboratory Support
Receives specimens consisting of all specimen types, including blood, urine, stool, cultures, joint aspirations, and other fluids
Processes specimens using laboratory protocols, including centrifuging, aliquoting, and preparing specimens for transport
Performs basic diagnostic tests such as bleeding time, occult blood, urine dipsticks, pregnancy testing, and point-of-care glucose testing
Understands and applies proper specimen storage and transport requirements to maintain integrity
Data Entry & Computer Systems
Enters, verifies, and tracks specimen data using the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture or Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS)
Generates labels and ensures proper patient/specimen identification using barcoding systems
Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for test orders, specimen status, and results follow-up
Administrative & Clerical Tasks
Performs clerical functions, including answering telephones, filing, faxing, and specimen log maintenance
Maintains inventory of collection supplies and notifies Material Management of low stock
Assists with document control and quality assurance logs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
Teamwork & Communication
Interacts effectively with patients, laboratory personnel, nursing, and medical staff
Demonstrates professional conduct, confidentiality, and sensitivity to patient needs, especially within the veteran population
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Ability to follow complex written procedures and verbal instructions related to laboratory testing and patient care
Knowledge of medical laboratory practices, specimen handling, infection control, and safety protocols
Skill in identifying and responding to adverse patient reactions during specimen collection
Perform blood collection and operate delicate instruments
High school diploma or equivalent
May require Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
