Position: Public Works Director

Full Time, non-exempt 40-Hours per week

Salary: starting rate of $32.10/hour, DOE

Summary of Work:

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs complex supervisory, administrative, and operational work in planning, organizing, directing, and supervising the Public Works Department. This includes water, sewer, streets, traffic control, streetlights, city pool, and city facilities. Works under the guidance of the Mayor and exercises direct supervision over all public works employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Working Supervisor: Actively participates in daily field operations including road maintenance, water/sewer repairs, snow removal, and landscaping.

Infrastructure Management: Plans, directs, and coordinates a comprehensive public works program; maintains accurate records and engineering maps.

Budget & Finance: Prepares and manages the department budget and controls operating costs within strict limitations; assists with grants and loans.

Compliance & Safety: Oversees water/wastewater systems to ensure they strictly meet Montana DEQ requirements; manages the department safety program.

Leadership: Schedules, trains, and evaluates personnel; builds a motivating work environment and resolves workplace grievances.

Public & Council Relations: Advises the Mayor/Council on projects; attends monthly Council meetings; responds professionally to citizen complaints.

Emergency Response: Remains on call for after-hours emergencies (snow/ice control, water leaks, sewer, and drainage issues).

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Prefer advanced training or a college degree in public works, engineering, management, or related fields. Must have three (3) years of supervisory or administrative experience involving municipal infrastructure, materials, equipment, budgets, and personnel management. Knowledge & Skills: Considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction standards, and municipal regulations; skilled in operating heavy equipment (loaders, backhoes, motor graders, snow plows) and office computers/spreadsheets.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possess a valid state of Montana driver's license (Commercial Driver's License may be required).

Obtain Montana State Certifications for Water (Class 3A Distribution & Class 3B Treatment) and Wastewater (Class 3C) within 3 years.

Obtain a Swimming Pool Operations License within 3 months of hire.
