WORKSITE: INDEPENDENCE, VA

The Grayson County Board of Supervisors is seeking a motivated and energetic individual to join our team as a Building Inspector.

Position Overview:

Performs entry-level, responsible work in the enforcement of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code *USBC) for residential properties, under the direct supervision of the Building Official.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

Perform inspections as necessary to various permitted trade work for code compliance;

Interpret and apply the building code and safety regulations for residential buildings.

Report inspection results;

Understand and use inspection software and schedule inspections when necessary;

Read and interpret building plans and technical specifications;

Establish and maintain co-operative working relationships with co-workers, contractors, and permit holders;

Provide effective customer service, resolve conflicts, and deal courteously, yet tactfully, with the public;

Understand principles and practices of the construction industry and building trades;

Communicate with the public to answer a wide variety of questions via phone and/or e-mail;

Research permits and prior inspections to obtain job status.

Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time;

Regular and predictable attendance

Qualifications:

High school diploma and 3-5 years experience in constructions trade;

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

Certification as VA DHCD Residential Building Inspector, or Electrical Inspector, or Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector within 18 months of hire.

Possession of valid appropriate drivers license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the ability to obtain one upon employment start date. Acceptable driving record required.
