About
The Manufacturing Chemist - High Purity Specialty Chemical is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment used to manufacture, purify, and package high-purity specialty chemicals in a manufacturing environment. This hands-on role requires strong attention to detail, operational discipline, and the ability to consistently follow established procedures. Responsibilities include operating large-scale distillation and purification equipment, sampling, filling, inspecting, and packaging high-purity chemical products for shipment to customers around the world while maintaining the highest standards of product quality and contamination control.
The Manufacturing Chemist works closely with Production, Engineering, Quality, Analytical, and R&D teams to ensure safe operations, reliable processes, and consistent product quality. The position requires the ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication and coordination with cross-functional teams.
Following training, Manufacturing Chemists will work an 8-hour day or swing shift schedule, either 7:00 AM-3:30 PM or 3:00 PM-11:30 PM. Overtime may be required based on business needs. The position is based at Mead but may require work at either the Mead or Longmont facility based on operational needs.
Essential Functions
Assemble, operate, inspect, and maintain scientific glassware and associated process equipment, including reactors, condensers, receivers, and vacuum systems.
Prepare and verify equipment for operation, including raw material charging, equipment inspections, line verification, and confirmation of proper equipment configuration.
Ensure process equipment and scientific glassware are properly assembled, leak-free, and ready for safe operation during distillation and purification processes.
Operate large-scale distillation, purification, and related chemical processing equipment in accordance with approved procedures.
Monitor and adjust process parameters such as temperature, pressure, vacuum, reflux ratio, and flow rates to meet established process requirements.
Follow established procedures as described by Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), batch records, work instructions, and other approved operating procedures.
Collect process samples and support quality control testing activities as required.
Fill, inspect, label, and package finished high-purity chemical products in custom containers for shipment to customers.
Maintain the highest standards of product quality, cleanliness, and contamination control throughout manufacturing and packaging activities.
Execute complex, multi-step cleaning and decontamination procedures for process equipment and scientific glassware.
Verify equipment cleanliness and readiness for subsequent production activities in accordance with high-purity product and contamination control requirements.
Accurately document process data, observations, deviations, equipment conditions, and production activities in required records and systems.
Identify and communicate process issues, equipment concerns, quality concerns, and safety risks to supervision.
Participate in shift handovers and provide clear and accurate status updates regarding process conditions, equipment status, production activities, and outstanding issues.
Assist with basic equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs as appropriate and within training and assigned responsibilities.
Work with basic gas plumbing and fittings, including NPT and compression fittings such as Swagelok, as required for equipment setup, operation, and maintenance.
Use basic hand tools, machinery, and equipment to support manufacturing operations and perform basic repair and maintenance tasks.
Collaborate with Production, Engineering, Quality, Analytical, Process Engineering, and R&D teams during process development, troubleshooting, and production campaigns.
Assist R&D, Process Engineering, Quality Assurance, and others with technical activities as needed.
Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of SOPs, work instructions, and manufacturing processes to improve operational consistency, safety, efficiency, and product quality.
Follow all company safety policies, laboratory procedures, environmental requirements, and other applicable regulations while maintaining a safe and orderly working environment.
Properly wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing all manufacturing, sampling, cleaning, packaging, and related activities.
Attend training as designated to develop technical knowledge, maintain required qualifications, and support continued professional development.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Manufacturing Chemist I: 2-5 years of experience operating chemical process equipment in a manufacturing, pilot plant, or chemical processing environment.
Manufacturing Chemist II: Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or another technical field and 2-5 years of experience operating chemical process equipment in a manufacturing, pilot plant, or chemical processing environment.
Experience working in a highly disciplined manufacturing or chemical processing environment where strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is required.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to following established procedures and accurately documenting work.
Ability to accurately complete production documentation, batch records, operating records, and other required documentation.
Effective communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to provide clear shift handovers and communicate process or equipment concerns.
Ability to perform hands-on work in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Familiarity with rudimentary gas plumbing, including NPT and compression fittings such as Swagelok.
Aptitude with basic tools and machinery and the ability to perform basic repair and maintenance tasks.
Ability to learn and safely operate chemical processing, distillation, purification, vacuum, and related equipment.
Ability to work an 8-hour day or swing shift schedule and work overtime as required based on business needs.
Must be able to successfully complete a post-offer, job-related medical evaluation consistent with business necessities and applicable law.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a GMP-regulated or highly controlled manufacturing environment.
Experience with distillation operations, vacuum systems, heat transfer systems, pumps, condensers, reactors, receivers, and related process equipment.
Familiarity with process control systems and instrumentation.
Experience with analytical characterization techniques including NMR, GC, and KF.
Experience manufacturing, purifying, handling, or packaging high-purity or specialty chemical products.
Experience with contamination control and complex equipment cleaning and decontamination procedures.

Work is performed in a chemical manufacturing environment and may require work in production, laboratories, warehouse, and other facility areas.
Regular standing, walking, bending, reaching, and hands-on work are required.
Regularly lift/move up to 10 lbs. Frequently lift/move up to 50 lbs. Occasionally push/move up to 100 lbs
Work in areas requiring personal protective equipment (PPE), including appropriate chemical-resistant clothing, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, respiratory protection, and other equipment as required.
Exposure to chemical processing equipment, fumes, vapors, airborne particles, heat, noise, and other manufacturing hazards may occur.
Work may require handling chemical raw materials, intermediates, finished products, cleaning agents, and waste materials.
Ability to safely operate and work around process equipment, scientific glassware, pumps, vacuum systems, heating and cooling systems, and other manufacturing equipment.
Ability to use basic hand tools and perform basic equipment setup, repair, and maintenance activities.
Ability to work at heights or access elevated equipment using stairs, ladders, platforms, or other approved means as required.
Must be able to follow PPE, chemical handling, contamination control, and other safety requirements at all times.

Pay
Pay:
Manufacturing Chemist I: $28.25 - $30.50 per hour, plus participation in the Company Bonus Plan, as applicable.
Manufacturing Chemist II: $34.00 - $37.50 per hour, plus participation in the Company Bonus Plan, as applicable.
