The Project Accountant will support full-cycle cost management for large, complex construction projects, with a strong focus on transactional finance, audit activities, and change order administration. This role partners closely with project cost management and site teams to maintain accurate financial records, ensure subcontractor compliance, and provide clear, data-driven reporting to internal and external stakeholders. The position is fully site-based and plays a critical role in keeping high-value commercial construction projects on budget, compliant, and financially transparent from concept through completion.

Support the full-cycle cost management of construction projects, establishing and maintaining robust cost controls from early concept through project completion.
Facilitate the use of the subcontractor change management system, ensuring responsible parties respond in a timely manner and that all submissions are complete and accurate.
Process change orders in the system of record, maintaining high standards of timeliness, accuracy, and completeness throughout the entire change order lifecycle.
Perform audit and transactional finance support activities, including detailed reviews of project financial data, documentation, and compliance with internal controls.
Assist in resolving invoice and change order discrepancies by investigating issues, coordinating with project teams and subcontractors, and supporting timely resolution of payment-related matters.
Review and interpret contractual terms to recommend appropriate entitlements related to change orders, claims, and other commercial issues.
Coordinate directly with client finance and accounting teams to ensure accurate financial reporting and full compliance with established financial controls and procedures.
Support the preparation and presentation of monthly cost reports and risk assessments, highlighting key variances, emerging risks, and recommended mitigation actions.
Contribute to monthly stakeholder meetings and formal presentations by providing clear financial content, data-driven insights, and informed commentary on project performance.
Analyze and report on local labor markets, union implications, commodity price fluctuations, and tax impacts to inform project cost strategy and budget updates.
Maintain accurate project accounting records, including reconciliations, data entry, and documentation related to subcontractor compliance and project costs.
Collaborate with the Project Cost Manager and broader project team to align transactional financial activities with overall project forecasting, risk assessment, and cost management strategies.
Leverage construction management and financial tools, including Procore and Smartsheet, to manage project financial data and support efficient, standardized processes.
Support continuous improvement of project accounting processes by identifying opportunities to streamline workflows, enhance data quality, and strengthen cost control practices.
Essential Skills

Strong analytical skills to assess cost data, labor markets, commodity trends, and tax impacts on project budgets.
Clear written and verbal communication skills to support stakeholder presentations and collaborative problem solving.
High attention to detail and accuracy in processing financial transactions and maintaining project records.

Comfort partnering closely with project cost managers and site leadership to align transactional activities with overall project strategy.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage high volumes of change orders and transactional finance activities.
Interest in long-term project work, including multi-year builds and a pipeline of future construction projects.
Work Environment
This is a fully on-site role based at large construction job sites across the United States, with current opportunities in Covington, Georgia; Wheatfield, Indiana; and Mesa, Arizona. Team members work on major, multi-building projects where each site can include anywhere from 4 to 14 buildings under construction, and each building may have a dedicated project team and project accountant. Projects typically span 18 months to several years, with a strong pipeline of additional builds that can provide ongoing work, depending on future project locations. The standard schedule is approximately 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., five days per week, with the expectation of being physically present on the job site. Onsite office space consists of modern mobile office units designed as corporate-style environments, typically accommodating 30-100 office and corporate employees. Each person has an individual workspace equipped with monitors, hardware, and standard office amenities, along with restrooms and lunch provided on site. The role involves extensive use of Procore as the primary project financial management tool, along with regular use of Smartsheet and some use of Excel to support established processes.
