Job Description
This Medical Assistant role provides hands-on clinical and administrative support in a busy clinic setting. You will assist with patient follow-ups, update patient records, coordinate lab orders and results, and ensure every patient receives timely and professional care. The position combines direct patient interaction with electronic medical record (EMR) documentation and front-desk support to keep the clinic running smoothly.
Responsibilities
Perform day-to-day medical assisting duties to support providers and ensure efficient patient care.
Conduct follow-ups with patients as directed, including scheduling and confirming follow-up appointments.
Update patient information accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) system, including visit notes, lab orders, and results.
Answer inbound phone calls in a professional and courteous manner, addressing patient questions and routing calls appropriately.
Order laboratory tests as directed by providers and ensure orders are entered correctly in the EMR.
Relay lab results to patients and providers in a timely and accurate manner, following clinic protocols.
Schedule, reschedule, and confirm patient appointments using the EMR and scheduling tools.
Provide clinical support such as preparing exam rooms, assisting with basic patient care tasks, and supporting providers during patient visits as needed.
Verify and update insurance information in the EMR and assist with basic insurance-related questions.
Deliver excellent customer service to patients, visitors, and colleagues, ensuring a positive and respectful experience.
Collaborate with front desk and clinical staff to maintain an organized, efficient, and patient-focused clinic environment.
Follow clinic policies, medical terminology standards, and documentation procedures to maintain accurate medical records.
Adhere to safety, compliance, and quality standards in all aspects of patient care and clinic operations.
Essential Skills
At least 1 year of experience in medical assisting or a closely related medical support role.
Medical assisting diploma or certification, or 1+ years of Medical Assistant experience (preferred but not required).
High School Diploma.
Hands-on experience as a Medical Assistant or in a medical or healthcare environment.
Proficiency using electronic medical records (EMR), specifically Athena.
Knowledge of medical terminology and ability to apply it accurately in documentation and communication.
Experience with electronic health records and electronic medical record systems.
Ability to perform appointment scheduling and manage patient flow in a clinical setting.
Experience with ordering labs and documenting lab orders and results.
Strong phone skills, including answering inbound calls and providing professional customer service.
Experience in patient care and clinical support within a medical or healthcare setting.
Basic Life Support (BLS) knowledge or certification.
Ability to work in a front desk or reception capacity, including check-in, check-out, and insurance information updates.
Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients.
Familiarity with health insurance processes and terminology.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or similar medical assisting credential is a plus.
Experience with Athena EMR or other electronic medical record systems.
Prior experience in a clinic or outpatient healthcare environment.
Experience in both front desk and back-office medical assisting functions.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when handling patient records and lab documentation.
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
Comfort working as part of a collaborative healthcare team, including providers, nurses, and administrative staff.
Customer service experience in healthcare or a similar service-oriented environment.
Willingness to learn clinic-specific workflows, policies, and procedures.
Work Environment
This role is based onsite at a clinic, providing direct support to patients and providers in a professional healthcare setting. You will work a consistent Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The clinic uses electronic medical records, including Athena, and relies heavily on digital documentation, appointment scheduling tools, and phone systems. The environment combines front desk and clinical support duties, requiring frequent interaction with patients, providers, and staff throughout the day. The clinic offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) plan, and holiday pay. Upon conversion to a permanent role, team members receive nine paid holidays and fifteen days of paid time off (PTO). Performance-based pay raises are available, and employees may earn additional PTO tokens, each worth one hour of PTO, which can be used at any time and accumulated without limit. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of St. Petersburg, FL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
