Job Description
The maintenance mechanic will support a high-speed production environment by performing maintenance on production lines, ensuring product quality, and repairing line machinery and equipment. This role applies strong mechanical expertise to determine appropriate work methods and procedures that maintain consistent, high-quality output while minimizing downtime and supporting a safe, efficient plant operation.
Responsibilities
Follow all work instructions and safety policies without exception, including consistent use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety devices.
Examine and operate machine controls to perform plate changeovers and start up machines according to production requirements.
Perform routine preventive maintenance checks on all production equipment and machinery to ensure reliable operation.
Repair basic mechanical components and replace parts on machines, including bearings, filters, wiring, valves, gauges, and other related components.
Observe and listen to mechanical devices in operation to identify unusual sounds or performance issues and determine the cause of problems.
Dismantle devices and equipment as needed to gain access to and remove defective or worn parts.
Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments to restore proper operation and improve performance.
Inspect used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements and assess whether repair or replacement is necessary.
Lubricate and clean machinery and support equipment to meet housekeeping and preventive maintenance standards within the plant.
Document and track changeover times and maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and equipment status.
Complete all assigned work orders with a focus on maintaining safety, reducing downtime, decreasing scrap, improving product quality, and enhancing overall plant efficiency.
Follow all safety rules and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout, housekeeping, and 5S standards, and continuously observe operations to help maintain a safe work environment.
Perform maintenance and repair on equipment such as waxers, scroll shears, presses, and related production machinery.
Essential Skills
At least 1 year of experience in maintenance within a manufacturing environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with experience in repair work in a production or industrial setting.
Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance in a manufacturing facility.
Ability to work with conveyors, belts, motors, sensors, pneumatics, and related mechanical systems.
Skill in troubleshooting mechanical issues and identifying root causes of equipment problems.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, charts, diagrams, and procedure manuals.
Proficiency in using hand tools and basic maintenance tools safely and effectively.
Ability to use precision measuring devices, including amp meters, electric meters, and hydraulic gauges.
Basic understanding of mechanical systems, equipment, and schematics relevant to manufacturing machinery.
Basic mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and work with decimals and fractions.
Ability to perform work in a mature and professional manner and demonstrate personal responsibility in completing assigned tasks.
High school diploma or GED.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working as a maintenance technician in a fast-paced production or industrial environment.
Familiarity with welding for basic maintenance and repair tasks.
Experience maintaining and repairing waxers, scroll shears, presses, and similar production equipment.
Comfort working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems in a manufacturing setting.
Ability to follow structured maintenance programs, including Lockout/Tagout and 5S practices.
Strong attention to detail when documenting maintenance activities and equipment changeovers.
Ability to work collaboratively within a production team and communicate effectively with operators and other maintenance personnel.

Work Environment
The role is based in a large, fast-paced manufacturing facility that operates high-speed conveyors and various press machines. You will work closely with a team of approximately 5-10 people in can and pail assembly, collaborating to keep production lines running efficiently. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout, housekeeping, and 5S standards. You will regularly work around moving machinery, mechanical systems, and production equipment, using appropriate PPE and safety equipment as required by plant policies.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chicago, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $32.00/hr.
