What you'll do:
The Operations Manager is responsible for leading daily warehouse, yard, inventory, shipping and receiving, and related operational activities to ensure a safe, efficient, organized, and customer-focused operation. This role provides leadership to warehouse and operational employees while coordinating inventory flow, staffing, equipment, facility needs, deliveries, and process improvement initiatives. Working closely with Sales, Purchasing, Transportation, Shop, and branch leadership, the Warehouse Operations Manager ensures materials are received, stored, picked, staged, and delivered accurately while maintaining high standards for safety, inventory control, productivity, and customer service. The ideal candidate is an experienced building materials operations leader with strong problem-solving skills, a hands-on leadership style, and the ability to anticipate operational challenges before they impact customers or the business.
Warehouse & Yard Operations
Lead daily warehouse and yard operations to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient material flow
Ensure warehouse, yard, loading, staging, and storage areas are prepared for daily business operations
Conduct routine operational walkthroughs to verify department readiness, housekeeping, inventory organization, and safety
Oversee picking, staging, stocking, receiving, loading, and movement of building materials
Coordinate placement of incoming inventory and optimize storage locations to improve workflow and space utilization
Ensure warehouse and yard materials remain organized, accessible, properly identified, and in sellable condition
Support shipping and receiving activities and resolve operational issues that may affect customer orders
Maintain high standards for warehouse and yard cleanliness, security, and organization
Inventory Management
Monitor inventory accuracy and support effective inventory-control processes
Coordinate cycle counts, physical inventories, inventory reconciliation, and related activities
Investigate inventory discrepancies and implement corrective actions
Partner with Purchasing and Sales to support appropriate product availability and inventory levels
Coordinate placement and relocation of inventory to maximize warehouse efficiency
Ensure incoming materials are accurately received, counted, inspected, and properly stored
Maintain accurate operational and inventory documentation
Support seasonal and storm-related inventory requirements as business needs change
Shipping, Receiving & Delivery Operations
Coordinate shipping and receiving priorities to support customer and operational requirements
Partner with Transportation and Dispatch to support accurate and timely customer deliveries
Ensure customer orders are properly picked, staged, verified, and prepared for delivery
Support route and delivery coordination as operational needs require
Assist with resolving delivery, material, and customer-service concerns
Ensure shipping and receiving teams follow established documentation and material-handling procedures
Coordinate communication between warehouse, yard, drivers, Sales, and customers when necessary
Team Leadership & Employee Development
Lead, coach, develop, and support warehouse, yard, shipping, receiving, and other assigned operational employees
Establish daily priorities and assign resources based on customer demand and operational requirements
Coordinate employee schedules and staffing needs
Review and approve employee timekeeping and attendance records as assigned
Conduct regular team meetings and communicate operational priorities, expectations, and business updates
Provide coaching and feedback to improve employee performance, safety, productivity, and customer service
Support onboarding, training, cross-training, and development of operational employees
Foster a professional, accountable, collaborative, and customer-focused work environment
Safety & EHS
Promote and maintain a safety-first culture throughout warehouse and operational activities
Ensure compliance with company safety policies, OSHA requirements, applicable regulations, and PPE standards
Conduct routine inspections of warehouse, yard, loading areas, equipment, and surrounding property to identify safety or maintenance concerns
Address safety concerns promptly and document findings as required
Coordinate Environmental Health & Safety training and scheduling requirements
Maintain required safety records and documentation
Ensure employees are properly trained before operating forklifts and other material-handling equipment
Report and respond appropriately to accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, and unsafe conditions
Fleet, Equipment & Facility Management
Coordinate maintenance and repair priorities for company vehicles, forklifts, warehouse equipment, and facility systems
Monitor equipment condition and ensure unsafe or damaged equipment is removed from service when appropriate
Coordinate with internal Maintenance teams, vendors, and service providers to minimize equipment downtime
Support routine inspections of company vehicles and material-handling equipment
Maintain safe, clean, functional, and secure warehouse and facility environments
Coordinate building maintenance and general property upkeep
Maintain accountability for facility access, company keys, and operational security procedures
Operational Planning & Continuous Improvement
Develop, implement, and improve warehouse and operational procedures
Identify opportunities to increase productivity, inventory accuracy, safety, and customer satisfaction
Establish standardized workflows and operational best practices
Monitor operational performance and recommend corrective actions when expectations are not met
Anticipate potential operational risks and proactively develop solutions
Support implementation of new systems, processes, equipment, and technology
Promote continuous improvement and operational consistency throughout the facility
Cross-Functional & Customer Support
Partner closely with Sales, Purchasing, Transportation, Dispatch, Shop, and branch leadership
Serve as an operational resource for employees and customers by addressing questions, concerns, and fulfillment needs
Resolve operational and customer issues promptly while maintaining company service standards
Coordinate shop workflow and production priorities when applicable
Support communication between warehouse operations and shop personnel
Maintain professional relationships with vendors, service providers, customers, and internal partners
Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required
Minimum 5 years of experience in warehouse, distribution, operations, building materials, or a related environment
Previous leadership or supervisory experience in warehouse or operational environments
Experience managing inventory, shipping/receiving, material handling, and warehouse workflow
Basic proficiency with computers, inventory systems, and business applications
Preferred Qualifications
10+ years of industry experience preferred
Experience within lumber, building materials, construction supply, wholesale distribution, or related industries strongly preferred
Experience leading warehouse, yard, shipping/receiving, transportation, or multi-functional operations
Knowledge of ERP, WMS, inventory management, and warehouse systems preferred
Forklift certification or experience with material-handling equipment preferred
Valid driver's license required where operation of company vehicles is necessary
CDL or commercial transportation knowledge is a plus
Experience with Lean, 5S, continuous improvement, or standardized work practices is a plus
Work Environment & Requirements
Work is performed across office, warehouse, yard, loading, shop, and outdoor environments
Significant time is spent walking and standing throughout operational areas
Frequent interaction with employees, customers, drivers, vendors, and management
Exposure to forklifts, trucks, building materials, warehouse equipment, noise, dust, and varying temperatures
Ability to stand and walk for the majority of the workday
Ability to bend, reach, climb, stoop, and perform physical operational activities as required
Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 100 pounds using appropriate lifting techniques, team assistance, or mechanical equipment
Required PPE must be worn when entering designated operational areas
Ability to safely navigate warehouse, yard, shop, and loading environments
Occasional overtime, early mornings, weekends, or extended hours may be required during inventory periods, severe weather events, seasonal demand, or other operational needs
