Summary As needed, additional positions may be filled using this announcement. Responsibilities This position is located in the United States Attorney's Office, Western District of Kentucky. The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Legal Assistant (OA) for the Criminal Division. Provides administrative and technical supervision to support staff who provides technical and legal assistant services to one or more Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs). As first line supervisor, incumbent organizes and directs the activities of support staff personnel assigned. If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing legal support work to the section chiefs and Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Criminal Division. Typical work assignments will include: Providing administrative and technical supervision, including instruction and training, to legal assistants and clerical staff assigned, and holding assigned staff responsible for satisfactory completion of work assignments. Preparing and conducting formal evaluations of employee performance. Developing or assisting in the development of Performance Work Plans. Completing progress reviews and preparing the annual performance appraisal for assigned legal assistants and support staff. Approving leave schedule and revising work schedules as needed meet changes in workloads and to assure adequate coverage for peak workloads and traditional holiday vacation time. Providing a wide variety of substantive legal support assistance to AUSAs to include processing a variety of complex legal clerical work; preparing and organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial; conducting factual and legal research to provide requested information to AUSAs. Providing a variety of direct clerical and administrative support including assigning and monitoring the closing of case files, maintaining a calendar of assigned active cases. Receiving visitors and callers, furnishing requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, and determining which matters should be referred to the Assistant US Attorney. Assisting AUSAs by preparing itinerary and by arranging travel, securing transportation and hotel reservations when needed. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications You must demonstrate you meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements and the Typing Requirement as noted below. Specialized Experience: To be qualified at the GS-9 level, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience at the GS-8 level in federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience supporting attorneys by providing a wide variety of administrative and technical guidance to support personnel; using office automation software (e.g., word processing software, docketing automation systems, electronic mail, and/or litigation support software) to perform legal support work relating to the examination, preparation and processing of a variety of legal documents and correspondence; and reviewing documents with legal implications for accuracy and completeness. To be qualified, you must @type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
