Join our team in Florida as an Entry Level Distribution Engineer, where you will play a crucial role in supporting power distribution infrastructure upgrades and storm hardening projects. Your work will involve engineering calculations and design to replace deteriorating cables, move overhead lines underground, reconductor existing lines, and replace aging poles. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to projects that will significantly enhance power distribution reliability across the Southeastern United States.
Responsibilities
Conduct site visits and take field notes, including visual inspection, equipment inventory, measurements, sketches, photographs, and field conditions. Compare field data to base plans.
Evaluate loading of various equipment components such as transformers and structural loading of poles to ensure a cost-effective, safe, and reliable design utilizing client specifications.
Review and interpret design manuals and details from local jurisdictions.
Determine and specify design requirements.
Perform electric distribution designs using field notes according to the Utility's standards. Design and draft construction drawings using standard engineering fundamentals for approval by federal, state, and local agencies.
Prepare projects and job packages using appropriate software, including material estimates and material requisitions for the prepared distribution electrical designs.
Review plans for proposed construction to determine impacts on existing distribution systems.
Develop solutions to existing conductor and structural clearance violations and issues.
Develop final design plan packages for the implementation of proposed solutions.
Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements.
Attend bi-weekly meetings with the project team on all projects/tasks.
Essential Skills
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university.
1 year of engineering experience.
Interest in Power/Energy/Utilities.
Proficiency in distribution design, power distribution, and engineering calculations.
Experience with Bentley Open Utility Designer, quality control, Smallworld, Maximo, Pole Load, and AutoCAD.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and initiative.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Hands-on design/engineering experience preferred.
Experience or basic knowledge of electric utility industry concepts, including primary and secondary distribution systems, utility standards, and design software packages.
Experience with the Duke Energy system and performing distribution design is a plus.
Experience interacting with customers and developers for distribution projects.
Current knowledge of BOUD/Maximo, Smallworld, and Microstation.
EIT/Passed Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
Excellent customer service skills are preferred.
Work Environment
Work is based in the Riverview office, with opportunities to work from home 1-2 days per week once fully trained and proficient. The office environment is modern, with a 1900 sqft space, and part of a 150-person power group in Florida. The position involves periodic out-of-town fieldwork, which may require overnight stays or full-day driving. Travel will be conducted using a company vehicle or through mileage reimbursement. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $27.00/hr.
