Position Title: School Nurse
Immediate Supervisor:Building Principal(s)
Summary:The School Nurse provides direct health services to individual students and participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the health services program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:(Other duties may be assigned.)
Assesses and manages health-related conditions.
Stays abreast of current information and trends in health care field and provides leadership in responding to new initiatives.
Coordinates the school-based management of health problems with the student, his/her family, the health care provider, the other school nurses and the teaching staff.
Training and supervision of non-licensed personnel performing health procedures. Determines tasks that may be appropriately delegated to unlicensed persons on a student by student basis and provides training in specific health care management and on-going supervision of these people for those tasks.
Counsels with students about health related concerns, assisting families in obtaining health care, identifying appropriate community health resources and contacting physicians concerning health issues and medications.
Supervises the health office, including medication administration and immunization compliance.
Participates in Child Study Team meetings (if applicable for building), obtaining developmental health histories from parents and/or health records, observing student behavior in classroom settings, and initiating the routing of behavior checklists.
Develops, implements, and evaluates individual health plans and special emergency health services for students with special needs.
Coordinates the establishment of guidelines, procedures and training in First Aid/CPR/First Responder Program for schools and staff.
Coordinates vision and hearing screenings programs, immunization reviews/follow up for the school.
Provides in-service educational opportunities for all staff regarding health related issues.
Orders and monitors nurse's office supplies.
Assures that school health services and activities are appropriately documented, both manually and electronically.
Facilitates Medicaid reimbursement procedures.
Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises non-licensed personnel performing health office procedures. Supervises students using health services and in the school in general.
Minimum Education or Experience:
RN with Baccalaureate degree required.
CPR certification required.
Licensure or Certification:
Current Iowa Nursing License

Ability to hear, speak, see, and carry out the routine duties of the position.
Ability to lift and/or physically manipulate students in order to provide appropriate care and/or in cases of emergency (CPR, Hiemlich maneuver, etc.). It may be necessary to lift up to 80 pounds to waist level (with assistance), lift up to 30 pounds to shoulder level, and lift up to 25 pounds above head level.
Ability to travel (drive) between attendance centers.
Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 25% standing and 25% walking.
