This role leads the planning, direction, and coordination of complex construction projects, with a strong focus on horizontal and heavy civil work and critical infrastructure. The Construction Manager 5 oversees project scope, cost, schedule, quality, and safety, while aligning technical activities with broader business objectives. The position requires a seasoned leader who can collaborate with diverse stakeholders, interpret construction documents, and drive projects to successful completion.
Responsibilities
Coordinate construction projects from planning through completion, developing detailed plans to accomplish project goals and integrating technical activities across engineering, construction, and related disciplines.
Lead the integration of technical activities across multiple teams, ensuring alignment between design, construction, safety, environmental, and operations.
Present and explain project proposals, progress reports, and findings to internal and external stakeholders in a clear and professional manner.
Analyze technology options, resource needs, and market or operational demands to plan and assess the feasibility of projects, especially in horizontal and heavy civil construction and critical infrastructure.
Confer regularly with management, production, and other functional teams to discuss project specifications, procedures, risks, and mitigation strategies.
Review, recommend, and approve contracts, cost estimates, and change orders to ensure alignment with budget, schedule, and scope.
Oversee and manage project cost and schedule performance, including forecasting, tracking, and reporting to ensure projects remain on budget and on time.
Review and interpret construction drawings and specifications, providing guidance to contractors and project teams and resolving discrepancies or conflicts in the field.
Independently observe contractor behavior and field operations, identify leadership priorities, and coordinate the full project team-including general contractor, safety, environmental, engineers, and other stakeholders-to move the project toward those priorities.
Apply construction management principles to strategic planning, resource allocation, and production methods to optimize project execution.
Promote and support quality control and production processes that improve the effective construction and distribution of project deliverables.
Work effectively with a broad spectrum of workers, applying 360-degree leadership to influence and align team members at all levels.
Manage personal workload and time effectively, working independently while meeting project deadlines and organizational expectations.

Proficiency with computer software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, and Visio.
Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction, or a related field.
10+ years of construction experience, including at least 5 years focused on horizontal and heavy civil projects.
At least 5 years of experience in heavy civil construction work.
At least 5 years of experience working on critical infrastructure projects.
A background of 10-20 years of progressive responsibility in construction management.
Minimum 5 years of experience in earthworks and critical infrastructure construction.
At least 10 years of experience reviewing and interpreting construction drawings.
At least 10 years of experience managing project cost and schedule.
Ability to independently observe contractor behavior, identify leadership priorities, and coordinate the full project team-including general contractor, safety, environmental, and engineering personnel-to move the project toward those priorities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
CCM (Certified Construction Manager), PMI, or PMP certification preferred.
Experience coordinating complex projects involving critical infrastructure and heavy civil construction.
Comfort working with scheduling tools such as P6 when applicable.
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and resource allocation for large-scale construction projects.
Experience preparing and delivering proposals, reports, and findings to senior leadership and external stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
Work Environment
This position is based in Columbus, OH, and typically operates on a 40-hour workweek with a standard daily schedule. The role involves a combination of office-based planning and field-based oversight on active construction sites, particularly in horizontal and heavy civil environments and critical infrastructure projects. The work environment includes the use of standard office technology and software, along with specialized construction-related tools such as Bluebeam and P6 when applicable. The position requires the use of specific safety equipment, including a monitor, keyboard, headset, and mouse for office tasks, as well as a Class 2 safety helmet, Class 2 or higher safety vest, cut and impact resistant gloves, ANSI Z87.1 or higher safety glasses or visor, and composite toe work boots made of leather or leather alternative that extend at least 4 inches above the ankle (no low-cut or sneaker style). A Class 2 or higher reflective jacket suitable for cold and wet weather is also required. The environment involves working around active construction activities, where adherence to safety procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment is essential.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $90.00 - $107.00/hr.
